Why are my Yorkie puppies born with water heads or anasarca condition?

It is difficult to say what the problem could be. The eye could have a birth defect where it didn't develop to its full size, it could have an internal problem, there could be a scratch on the eye or sustained an injury during or immediately after birth. In addition, the puppy seems to have a very round head. This is often seen in dogs with hydrocephalus. Many times, dogs with hydrocephalus do not show any signs and are normal. Signs of hydrocephalus may include lethargy, seizures, and nonspecific pain. The puppy should be presented to a veterinarian to be examined to try and determine what is wrong so that it may be treated accurately and maximize the chance for recovery. It is hard to know what type of dog the sire was. Some type of small terrier or Chihuahua would be a reasonable guess. There are companies that can test the DNA of the puppies and give a report about possible breeds they have in their lineage.

Hello, It's possible R has swimmer's syndrome or any number of anatomical deformities. I'd recommend an x-ray and a physical exam from a veterinarian to evaluate further. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Atlanto axial subluxation or cervical strokes or tetraparalysis due to tick paralysis or botulism or polyradiculoneuritis are all possible differentials although the diagnosis that your vet gave to you is probably the most likely. I would strongly recommend to have Dexter checked by a specialist in Neurology and Neurosurgery and have the best diagnostic and treatment options offered. I am happy to discuss further the problem if needed either on the forum or in a ''private" consultation.

This may be normal for the puppy, or could indicate that it has hydrocephalus, which is common in Chihuahuas. I would recommend that you have Lil Boy checked out by a vet, who may be able to tell you if his head is normal or not, as well as check for other congenital abnormalities. Here is some more information on hydrocephalus: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2324

I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. A couple things could be going on. One is that he just has a hard time keeping his blood sugar up. We often see this in toy breed puppies. They need to be fed small frequent meals and you should keep a nutritional supplements handy. They usually outgrow it. The other thing I'm concerned about is a portosystemic shunt. This requires blood work and often times a CT scan to diagnose but it can be corrected with surgery. I would get more information from your veterinarian about what they are suspecting the problem is. Also, get a second opinion if you're not comfortable with what you're being told. Hopefully the situation is fixable!

I am so sorry that your sweet Jenny has been diagnosed with ascites. There are a few different possibilities that can cause this including but not limited to a liver shunt (the blood bypasses the liver and doesn't detox like it should), congenital heart problems, low protein, a viral infection, a bacterial infection, parasites and more. I would recommend starting with a full panel of blood work and a fecal. Depending on the results, your vet may want to send in some of the fluid from her abdomen, perform x-rays, and/or an ultrasound. I hope you all are able to resolve this and she gets better really soon! Hugs!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! This puppy is affected by severe debilitating congenital defects. I want to be honest and say I do not think this puppy will survive and if it does it is likely not going to be normal. I would not return it to Dolly and the other litter mates. I would continue to bottle feed the puppy and see how it does over time. If it starts to decline I urge you to humanely euthanize. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best!
