Why is my yellow lab puppy whining and peeing inside the house?

If Sadie is urinating each time she goes outside overnight and urinating more frequently during the day this could be a sign of a urinary tract infection, which is not uncommon in a young female puppy. I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian who would likely check a urine sample for signs of infection. She may have also learned that if she whines to go out you'll wake up and she'll get a little play time so once you rule out a medical problem you may want to work on letting her cry for a bit in her crate before letting her out.

It is normal for a puppy as young as Bella to need to go outside once at night. I'd recommend taking her outside when she starts whining: make sure you go straight outside because you don't want her to think this is play time. If she does not urinate or defecate bring her back inside and out her directly in the crate. If she starts whining again do your best to ignore her until the morning. This is generally something she should grow out of as long as you are consistent.

Whining can be caused by a number of different things - pain, anxiety, frustration, or loneliness are all common reasons that dogs might whine. It can also be an attention-seeking behavior in some cases, especially if she has learned that this is an effective way to get your attention. Many dogs need to be crated at night to prevent accidents until they are 1-2 years old, so this is not unexpected - I would simply go ahead and crate her at night for now :) Once she's a bit older, you can gradually try giving her more freedom in the house at night. Excited peeing is usually something that puppies grow out of once they're older. In the meantime, you can help by ignoring her for a few minutes when you first get home and asking your visitors to do the same. Once she calms down a bit, you can gently pet her and say hello. Leaning over dogs to greet them also tends to make this problem worse, so crouching down to say hi may also be helpful. You can also take her outside to potty just before visitors come over to help decrease the chances of an accident. It's also very important not to punish her for this behavior, as she can't help it - corrections will only make her more anxious, and often makes the urination worse.
