If you have to wait until next summer, that is fine. If you can do it earlier, then do so. The important thing is that she get spayed at some point. Until then, be sure to keep her away from male dogs if/when she comes into heat.

A spayed female dog will make a good companion. If you get a young dog I would have her spayed at six months before her first heat. The young dogs heal much more quickly from the surgery and shouldn’t have complications. After a week of recovery she would be back to her old self, Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
