Are vet techs qualified to give medication dosage advice for my dog?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 25 lbs

Are technicians qualified to answer questions or give advice regarding dosage of the medications? The vet office I take my dog to has technicians call me to follow up, and they tend to give out advice on something like the dosage on the medication or what to do for medical conditions. I'm not sure how much they consult with the actual doctor before they give out these advice.

While I can't speak for every individual, veterinary technicians typically are qualified to give out dosing information and information on medical conditions. Usually they have spoken to the vet prior to giving out the information. If you are not comfortable with that, just let your vet know and ask them to please be the one to call you personally with any information that needs to be relayed.
