How to tell if puppies are purebred and from the right parents?

Your puppy does look like it could be a chihuahua, but it's absolutely impossible for me to say if it is purebred or not just by looking at a picture. You can do a DNA test on your puppy called a Wisdom Panel, and that will give you the exact genetic make up of your puppy letting you know if it's purebred or not. https://www.wisdompanel.com I hope this helps!

Hi, it looks like these puppies could be Chihuahua x shih tzu. It is impossible to tell for sure 100% if they are just a cross between these breeds or if there is a small percentage of other breeds in there but there is definitely some chihuahua and some shih tzu as far as I can tell ! Hope this helps !

Its important to do research prior to purchasing a purebred or designer puppy. I recommend to tour the breeder's property and see how the dogs are kept. Also make sure the meet at least the mother but ideally the father too. Red flags are 'breeders' asking/offering to meet at a gas station or some other location, not allowing you to see where the dogs are kept or offering multiple breeds/having MANY dogs. If you find a breeder who only has a few dogs and likely only one breed, especially if they allow you to visit the property, its highly unlikely they are a puppy mill. Please post again if you have any further questions.

Yes, there are things that you should look out for when you go to see this puppy. I've linked websites with questions to ask, and warning signs for puppy mills: http://www.buyingapuppy.com/index5.html http://www.buyingapuppy.com/index4.html

In-breeding over time can cause certain characteristic traits and genetic qualities (including defects) to be selected for that are undesirable. However it is unsure what exact characteristic traits will predominate in each individual puppy and to what degree. I think it is fair to ask if this line of pedigree has any genetic defects that you should be concerned about that could possibly pass on to Mabei, to make this breeder a bit more transparent in information and also hold them accountable for informing you as a concerned potential adoptee. Also another great tool is the DNA genetic testing (the blood test that is done through a vet, not the cheek swab one which is highly inaccurate) which will give you a list of genetic predispositions and abnormalities that Mabei currently has so that you are aware from the very beginning of any disease processes she will be vulnerable to developing later in life. In-breeding is not what we want to see done in any situation, because it creates all kinds of genetic nightmares in most situations and does not speak highly of this breeder in my professional opinion. I hope this helps and best wishes on your decision making when it comes to adopting this pet. Best wishes and take care.

Hello. First, you can ask the breeder for proof of registration for both puppy parents. Then, look at lots of pictures of purebred Golden puppies. When you visit the litter, are all the puppies pretty similar with the characteristics seen in this puppy breed? If the puppies are not pure, you should see some discrepancies, such as different coat lengths, or white spots on the chest or paws. Having papers is no guarantee, as there are dishonest breeders, but go with your heart & love whatever puppy you choose. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Yes it could be and could look like it, but it is difficult to know it for certain. Do you know anything about the mother and father? Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
