My friend's hyperactive dogs need training. How do I suggest it?

This is a very common issue with puppies - they often get overly excited during play, and have trouble controlling themselves :) It's possible that your sister may tend to be louder, more active, or move more suddenly when she plays with the puppy, which often results in the puppy getting more "wound up." If your sister doesn't live with you, this may also be happening because the puppy is excited to see her when she comes over. Make sure that you have lots of different toys available for Sherri - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys or balls for chasing and fetching. Your sister should always use a toy when she is playing with Sherri, so that Sherri has something to bite on. If she starts to get too excited, you can ask her to sit for a treat, or engage her in some other activity that is calmer and less exciting until she settles down. If needed, you can even give her something to chew on, such as a bully stick or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, and put her in her crate for a while to let her calm down. Her ability to stay calm during play should improve as she gets older, just as it does for human children :) In the meantime, you can help her by redirecting her to a calmer activity when needed.

I strongly recommend taking Ziggy to professional training if he is too big for you to handle. Jumping up to the point where he is injured people is unacceptable and is only gonna get worse as he gets older. There are harnesses available to help prevent dogs from jumping, but these need to be used in conjunction with the training. Basic obedience training is going to be the foundation to work on any other problems. Ziggy should know sit stay and heal and be willing to listen to those commands even when excited. The advice I always give is to contact your local veterinarian for a referral to a veterinary behaviorist ( a veterinarian who specializes in behavior). If this is not an option in your area, then your vet should be able to give you some recommendations for reputable trainers in your area. Working with a professional is the safest and best recommendation I can give. It is never a good idea to let a behavioral issue like biting go on for too long. And your friend should definitely make sure this dog has a rabies vaccine. There are many legal issues that can arise if this dog bites another person and breaks the skin. This is a very difficult problem. This is link to a behavioral issue that can be resolved with training. I would recommend asking a trainer to come into the house to help you. Also I would start working on basic commands, like sit, come and stay. That way when people come over you can re direct Ripley. I would recommend actually hiring a trainer to come and evaluate Axel. They can work with you and him on how to either stop the behavior or redirect him so he does not bite people.
