Stray dog not moving for weeks: Is it sick? Should I call a vet?

Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. If Ikea literally hasn't moved in a week, she is probably urinating and defecating on herself and her surrounding area and that would be the cause of the smell. I would be extremely concerned about a dog that hasn't moved in a week, and that says the dog is extremely ill. This would be a medical emergency and you would need to get Ikea into a vet now.

This poor dog could be shivering because of pain or being cold. If you are concerned about rabies, do not approach him, but you would see aggression from the dog as well as foaming at the mouth if he had it. I would called your local animal rescue to come and get him right away. He likely needs veterinary treatment, which they can provide. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I am so very sorry to hear about your dog. Based on your photos she looks severely emaciated and dehydrated, and possibly anemic (I can see her third eyelid in one photo and it looks quite pale). The possible causes are many and could include severe parasitism, infectious disease, autoimmune disease, organ failure, cancer, toxin exposure. Your dog needs veterinary attention right away if she is to survive, or to help her pass peacefully if you are unable to provide care for her. It sounds like she is suffering and she needs to be examined by a vet and have some testing done (such as stool testing and bloodwork to start) to try to determine why she is so ill. She could have parvo. If this is a stray dog I suggest you either take her to your local animal shelter or call animal control to come pick her up so she can get treatment. If you want to keep her then I suggest you take her to your local vet for an exam. I know this one is a little ways from you but you could call them for advice. It is safe to vaccinate a dog without prior proof of vaccination, and if he was a stray, I would suspect he wasn't vaccinated. Lethargy can be a side effect of the vaccines, but it could also be due to the fact he's in a new place and that's stressful. Keep an eye on him, and if he's still acting this way in another 24-48 hours, have him see by a vet. Best of luck.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Unfortunately, the dog you see may have a systemic illness or infection. You can try feeding him ground beef or pork and see if he will eat more or offer canned dog food. Chicken broth added to the food may entice him more as well. If he is suffering from a disease, unfortunately he may not want to eat because he is so sick. If you are able to report him to an animal rescue, they may be able to catch him and take care of him but I know there are a lot of strays around and you may not be able to find a rescue that would take him in.
