How much food should I feed my small breed dog based on its weight?

That depends on the food that you are feeding! Different types of dog food will contain a different number of calories per cup of food. I recommend starting with the feeding recommendations found on the bag of food you are using. There will usually be a grid that has the body weight and daily food amount. I recommend dividing the daily food amount into 2 feedings, AM and PM. Some dogs have a higher or lower metabolism than the average dog, so after feeding for a month, I re-evaluate and see if we need to increase or decrease that feeding amount to get them to their ideal body weight.

Charlie needs around 300-400 calories per day for his weight and age (considering he is a puppy) so I would adjust the cups per day keeping this in mind. Small red dogs can safely be fed once or twice a day based on your schedule or how well they eat. A base starting point for feeding is about 1 cup of food for 20 pounds. This can be varied based on health status and activity level. For him being older I would try twice a day at 1/2 cup each. If he loses weight you know to increase some and vice vera. There is no way to know if his weight is appropriate without feeling him belly and back as the hair hides a lot. Your vet can examine him and tell you for sure and calculate exact calories needed

That feeding guide is for the whole day so Lulu would get 1/2 to 3/4 cups of food per day, not per feeding. I know it doesn't seem like much that is enough food for a small dog. I hope this answers your question!

If you ask 10 vets you will probably get 10 answers. You will have make a plan to feed him a specific amount and then monitor him. If he is looking too thin then give more food, if he is too fat then you need to cut back. That is the best I can tell you. It depends on too many factors like his metabolism for one. So the guidelines on the food bag are just that, guidelines. According to my calculations, a 3# small breed dog need about 40 calories per pound of body weight per day so that makes 120 calories. At 32 calories per patty, that would make 3-3/4 patties per day. Six is WAY too much! The Stella & Chewy's food is fine to feed.

This sounds like a fairly large amount of food for a 7.6 lb dog - she may not be hungry. If she seems to be losing weight you should see your veterinarian to make sure there is nothing medically wrong that is making her not want to eat. Otherwise I think you can measure out how much food she needs in a day and just leave it for her to eat. She'll eat eventually when she is hungry.
