Could my senior dog's stomach mass be from a recent fall down stairs?

Gumbo definitely is at increased anesthetic risk (risk of adverse events during anesthesia and risk of poor recovery) at age 14 (7-8 years of age is considered geriatric), even with normal blood work (normal liver/kidney values). In addition those are extremely large masses and surgical removal could definitely affect anal tone (result in incontinence) assuming that anesthesia and recovery do go well. There is also a possibility that the type of cancer Gumbo has is metastatic and has already spread to the lungs for which the prognosis is poor (chest rads would be recommended prior to proceeding with surgery). I would recommend bringing Gumbo to have the anal glands checked regularly to make sure that they are empty. I also recommend keeping Gumbo as comfortable as possible as consulting with your veterinarian about treatment and humane endpoints if the masses become ulcerated.

She could have had a stomach ulcer that perforated. She may have had heart disease that caused her passing. The only way to know for sure what happened would have been to have your vet perform a necropsy (autopsy). Without doing that, all we can do is guess. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. It does not sound like GDV to me. I'm concerned it has to do with Yezler's heart failure. Fluid back up from heart failure can lead to an enlarged stomach due to fluid collecting in that area. I would take him into a vet now to get this checked out. I recommend an echocardiogram and a discussion about medication for his heart disease. Please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

I'm really sorry you're going through this with Tony. The masses may or may not have to do with his problems that you're seeing - they could be benign growths, but the only way to know for sure is to test the lumps and see what they are. Your vet can do a simple test for this called a fine needle aspiration. Regarding whether or not it's time to euthanize him, you should know that there is a disease called Vestibular Disease (sometimes called "Old Dog Vestibular Disease) that causes signs such as you're describing. They usually recover uneventfully in 5 - 7 days. However, many other conditions (such as stroke, as you've mentioned) could cause these signs. I recommend getting Tony seen by your vet as soon as possible to sort out what's going on with him, and figure out if he has a poor quality of life and whether euthanasia should be considered, or perhaps whether this is a treatable disease.

The first question to be addressed is whether or not Zara is physically strong enough to withstand the surgery. She will need a full physical exam with blood work to determine this. Second, the type of tumor and its staging needs to be addressed. Are these masses localized, or have they spread to lymph nodes, lungs, brain, etc? Finally, what aftercare would Zara need? How debilitated would the procedure leave her? The ultimate question for you to consider is length of life vs quality of life. At her age, it may be best to let her live out the rest of her life in relative comfort, rather than in a lengthy--and possibly painful--recovery.

Vomiting that often in an older dog that still has an appetite and is drinking water can be a sign of something stuck in the stomach or a mass. If Kruzer ate a ball, toy bone or something in the yard it may not be able to pass and may sit in the stomach causing irritation and vomiting. As this has been going on for a few weeks I recommend taking him in for abdominal X-rays. They should be able to see if the stomach is normal and if there is anything stuck in it. If he's losing weight and not feeling well then I would run a blood panel also to check his organ function. Once they have a diagnosis of the cause of the vomiting they can then proceed with treatment. If he has something stuck in the stomach sometimes surgery is needed to remove it. I'm sorry Bruno is sick! Unfortunately in a dog his age, a malignant tumor is always high on the list of potential causes. Senior dogs are prone to cancer. You can ask the vet to do a biopsy to make sure it's a tumor for sure, but that would be my guess. I'm sorry i don't have better news for you. Best of luck.
