My senior Pomeranian has a persistent cough. What can I give him?

The most likely causes for what you have described in this breed would be: 1. collapsing trachea 2. reverse sneezing 3. heart disease/failure 4. kennel cough 5. asthma 6. heartworm disease Of course I cannot know what is going on without examining him myself. I suggest you try to find a way to get him seen by a vet. This may be nothing to worry about (like reverse sneezing) or it may be serious like heart disease.

So sorry that Mary is having this problem. Unfortunately, there really isn't anything over the counter that you should give her, especially without knowing the cause. She could have a problem with her heart and have some fluid in her lungs or have an infection, like pneumonia. If you are not able to take her to a vet than try to keep her as quiet as possible and keep her hydrated and eating. Other than that, she would need to see a vet to diagnose the problem and then prescribe medications to treat. If you have a vet that regularly treats her, you could call and see if he/she would prescribe a cough medication to see if that helps at all.

There are a number of possible causes for a cough in a 12 year old poodle. We can group those causes into 2 big categories: 1) the primary issue is airway OR 2) the primary issue is the heart. If the problem is his airway, it may be that he has a collapsing trachea, which results in a unique honking type cough. If the lower airways (the lungs) are the issue, it could be a number of possible causes including bronchitis, pneumonia, or cancer. If the problem is his heart, coughing may result from congestive heart failure, which is a buildup of fluid in the lungs because the heart is not pumping effectively. We can also see a cough if the heart is enlarged and is pushing up on the trachea. A visit to your vet is warranted, and chest xrays would help identify what is happening. Please note: His respiratory rate at rest should not persistently be more than 40 breaths in 1 minute. If his breathing is persistently faster than that or if he seems weak, it is an emergency. Citirizine is an antihistamine that can be helpful if a dog has some allergies or even mild airway irritation. If Shero is coughing so much that he is bringing up phlegm and mucus I would start to worry about a respiratory infection that may need treatment with antibiotics. In these little tiny puppies I tend to treat more aggressively since their immune systems are not fully mature and they can't always fight off infections or other illnesses. I also worry that little sick dogs and cats can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) if they are not able to keep down their food. This can happen if a puppy is coughing and regurgitates his stomach contents a few too many times. I would get Shero back to a veterinarian since his signs are worsening. They may recommend bloodwork and possibly chest radiographs. I hope this helps!
