Why is my senior dog peeing everywhere after a back injury?

I would strongly recommend having your veterinarian examine Spot and check a urine sample on her. We very commonly see urinary tract infections in older female dogs, so if that is what is going on, her symptoms will only get worse until she is treated. Fecal and urinary incontinence can be caused by many things including problems with the nervous system or nerves innervating these organs due to spinal cord problems, vetebrae problems, enlargement of organs near the back of the abdomen, tumors, anal region problems, urinary incontinence secondary to her being spayed, etc. So I would highly advise a trip to your veterinarian and let them take a thorough history. They will perform a physical exam and most likely a rectal exam and then advise a set of diagnostics to try to solve these problems. Blood work, fecal tests, x-rays and ultrasound are all initial possible tests to be performed. Once diagnostics are performed the problems can then be addressed. At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

She is probably suffering from urinary incontinence, a common condition in old female dogs, take her to the vet and they will first rule out a urinary infection then they will start her on a medication for urinary incontinence.

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. The urine test will also screen for other causes of accidents like diabetes and kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bruno!
