Is it safe to vaccinate or spay an elderly 21-year-old chihuahua?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. At 10yrs old, Brian's is not too old to have this procedure done. Many of the drugs used for surgery help control seizures. In older dogs I like using Midazolam as the pre-anesthetic drug combined with atropine to help keep the heart rate at a good rate and then inducing with protocol which also controls seizures. As long as your vet knows she has seizures he or she will make the most appropriate decision for anesthetic drugs. I hope this helps! I am so sorry that you are exeoeriencing these problems with Wiggles I am sure it's very upsetting. Because mammary tumours are Hormone linked I would advise spaying her when she has the tumours removed. The last thing you would want is for Wiggles to have another mammary tumour in the future and therefore another surgery. For anaesthetics for older dogs many precautions are taken. Your veterinarian will discuss these with you to help put your mind at ease. They include blood pressure monitoring and intravenous fluid treatment before, during and after the surgery. Even if not required by her veterinarian, a full exam and bloodwork should be performed prior to surgery. I know how stressful surgery can be. It is true that spaying your pets will prevent any future pyometra event. This is key to your pets health moving forward. I think that the pros outweigh the cons when you are considering spaying your fur babies. As long as their bloodwork looks good, your vet is experienced spaying older pets, and your vet has a safe senior protocol to use for the pre-anesthetic drugs (i.e. Midazolam + Butorphanol), then they will have minimal risks involved with surgery. After that, it's fine for her to be around healthy vaccinated dogs, sign up for puppy kindergarten classes, etc. - but I would not take her dog parks or other high-traffic areas with lots of unknown dogs until she is completely finished with her vaccine series at 16+ weeks of age. Some umblical hernias are harmless and don't need to be fixed, while others do. Your veterinarian should be able to determine this at the time of her exam. If the hernia does need to be repaired, this can usually be done at the same time as her spay to avoid having to have two separate anesthetic procedures. Dogs are typically spayed at around 4-6 months of age. This can often be scheduled in conjunction with the pup's last set of vaccines, if you wish. Cost for a spay and hernia repair will vary widely depending on where you live and which specific vet clinic you go to, so I would suggest calling around to some local clinics in your area for prices if this is a concern.

I highly recommend it! It prevents Aaylah from getting a pyometra later in life. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It doesn't happen to every intact dog, but the chance is there, and it costs thousands to treat. I'd have her spayed as soon as possible, before her next heat. I hope this helps!

Just as in people, anesthetic procedures are not without risk. However, if she is deemed healthy and will be adequately monitored during the procedure, the risk is minimized. She should have a full blood panel performed beforehand to make sure she is healthy to undergo the procedure.
