Is it safe to give my dog training treats as an exercise reward?

A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky. The small amount of garlic powder in these treats is very unlikely enough to cause any problems. I would feel safe giving these to my dog. As with any treat, I would try to limit Isabelle's intake of treats to less than 10% of her daily calorie intake. These (and most) treats are high in calories (20 calories per treat!) so try to give them in small quantities, or even break them up into smaller pieces for training so she thinks she is getting more than she really is. The most popular training treats are soft, small treats. Dehydrated liver also works well. Certain biscuits are also made small for training purposes. As long as the treat is made in the United States, it should be fine to give. Treats should account for <10% of the daily calories because they are often higher in calories. You can use baby carrots or green beans as healthy training treats, if she likes them. Small bites of chicken or roast beef can also work well. If you prefer store bought treats, I like Zukes brand quite a bit for my own dogs - they use very healthy, high-quality ingredients, and their training treats are nice and small.

They also smell amazing to dogs and seem to be quite tasty to them. You can purchase these at any major pet supplies store. I hope this helps!

Yes. That is true. When the dog gets a treat from you it is more about the act of getting something (anything) from you and bonding with you rather than being about what type of treat they are actually getting. Of course there are some foods/treats a dog will prefer but health-wise it is best to just give the dog food. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes.
