What's the purpose of magnesium sulfate in my dog's moist food?

It will likely be absorbed to some degree depending on the formulation. You should assume that 100% will be absorbed when giving as a supplement to avoid overdosing. It's best to consult with your veterinarian before supplementing, because it may be unnecessary or harmful. I hope that helps and all is well with Coffee.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend preventing urinary tract infections and using a prescription urinary diet to prevent struvite bladder stones. I like Royal canin SO, Hill's science diet c/d or Purina UR. For example is Royal Canin SO the maximum magnesium in the dry food is 0.08%. That will be hard to match over the counter. I hope this helps!

The amount ingested calculates out to about 1600mg/kg. This is a potentially toxic dose. Ideally, Cooper should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting via injection since the ingestion occurred less than 2 hours ago. Activated charcoal may be given afterwards to further reduce absorption. Excess magnesium may cause gastrointestinal upset, depression or negative cardiac or nervous system effects. You can also contact the Pet Poison Helpline. There will be a fee for the call. They will work with you and your veterinarian to help Cooper through this episode. Their number is 855-764-7661.

Dicalcium phosphate and sodium selenite are additives to food products in order to increase the levels of both calcium and selenium. Both of these are minerals required in the diet of a dog in certain quantities in order to be healthy. I do not know enough about the Menadione to speak intelligently about it, other than it is some sort of vitamin K pre cursor. Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin that plays a large role in the clotting of blood in the body. Depending on the company of the food you use, I don't spend too much time looking at every ingredient on the label. I think it is great that you are being astute, but if you trust the company then I don't think you should be terribly worried. Additionally, if the company is reputable, you can always call up their veterinary nutrition department and ask for a detailed explanation as to the addition of the new stuff. Most of the time they are happy to talk to their clients. Hope this is helpful.

Electrolyte abnormalities are a known side affect of heart medications. It's important to make sure she's eating a good-quality balanced dog food so that's she taking in the proper electrolytes. It is also wise to periodically check her blood work to test the electrolyte levels and see where she is. If there are some that are either high or low, your veterinarian may recommend supplementation. There are also heart diets on the market that may be beneficial to her. Hill's and Royal Canin both make cardiac prescription diets. Here are a couple of links for additional information about what you can feed her. I hope this helps! http://vet.tufts.edu/heartsmart/diet/ http://www.vermontveterinarycardiology.com/index.php/for-clients/feeding-the-cardiac-patient

Hi, the best course of action is trying to understand the cause of constipation and address it. If it is not possible, try to help making sure that Maddy is hydrated and that she has a reasonable amount of fibre in her diet. In terms of ailments you can use, what is safe in dogs to use is lactulose, you could start with a small dose such as 2.5 ml twice a day and if it seems to help try to reduce it to once a day. Hope this helps !

If you are giving Motis a dog food formulated for senior dogs, she will be getting all the vitamins and minerals she needs to be healthy. You can give her a glucosamine supplemental which will help with her joint health, but otherwise no other supplements are needed. Too many vitamins and minerals can be detrimental to her health, so you want to avoid overdosing her on those. I recommend feeding a high quality senior dog food food such as Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Best of luck.
