My young puppy is wheezing and coughing. When should I see a vet?

I would recommend bringing Pippa to a veterinarian especially if she is coughing and breathing hard. She may have an upper respiratory infection but could also be something more. Your veterinarian can listen to her to make sure her lungs are clear and if not can perform x-rays to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia or bronchitis. You are absolutely correct in being concerned, as this condition can progress down into the lungs and cause pneumonia if not treated. I recommend having her seen by a vet sooner than next week so that she can start the appropriate course of treatment. Your vet may even elect to postpone her shots until she is better to give her immune system to fight the infection properly.

I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. I’m sorry Dickens isn’t feeling. If he seems to be struggling to breathe at all then he should be seen tonight, otherwise I think an appointment with your regular veterinarian tomorrow is fine. Upper respiratory tract infections are common especially in newly adopted shelters patients. However, I would also have distemper on my list of concerns. Your veterinarian may consider starting him on some antibiotics. In the meantime I would encourage you to take him into the bathroom and run the shower to humidify him every several hours. At her age, it may be a touch of kennel cough or it could be a more serious respiratory infection. The kennel cough typically resolves with or without treatment in about 2 weeks although the cough may linger afterwards. A physical exam would be required to diagnose other infection. If it is a respiratory infection, Lola may need antibiotics which your veterinarian can dispense.

Poor Mila Mumu! The most common cause of coughing in a puppy this age would be a respiratory infection such as kennel cough - if this is the problem, it should be easily treatable with antibiotics. The good news is, it's really not possible for her to have heartworm disease at her age - this illness takes a very long time to develop after being infected, so we don't typically see symptoms of it in dogs less than 2-3 years old at minimum. It's good that you're planning to take your pup in to the vet today for an exam. He/she will listen to her heart and lungs, and may recommend chest x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem. If she does have kennel cough (or something similar), your vet will probably send her home with antibiotics to treat the infection.
