My new puppy has a warm, dry nose and mucus. Should I worry?

Allergies are not common in a puppy but they can occur. More common would be an infection. I recommend to have him examined by a veterinarian. New pets should generally have an exam soon after they are adopted to test for worms which could spread to humans and have an over all health assessment. I hope this helps.

It depends. Is he still nursing? Gaining weight like the rest of his litter mates? Showing interest in what's going on? Was he examined after birth to ensure that he doesn't have a cleft palate? Was his mother vaccinated against distemper? These are all questions your have to ask yourself. A little bit of clear nasal discharge in an otherwise normal puppy probably isn't cause for concern, but if any other concerning signs are present - coughing, lethargy, not nursing and/or gaining weight and ESPECIALLY if distemper is a concern - then see a vet about this.

Congratulations on your new puppy! Sneezing and nasal discharge can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, which requires treatment by a veterinarian. As long as Aurora is eating, drinking, and acting normally without any significant coughing or sneezing, I would not be overly concerned about a bit of mucus in her stool or a mild running nose. If the mucus becomes a recurrent issue, it would be worth having her evaluated by the vet to assure that she doesn't have intestinal parasites or other concerns. If the runny nose worsens or if the discharge becomes yellow, green, or bloody, she would also need veterinary attention. Not to worry! On a side note, I would not recommend taking Aurora for walks around the neighborhood where she has access to any areas where other dogs have been previously until she has finished her vaccine series (over 16 weeks of age). She could acquire parvovirus, which is a serious gastrointestinal virus, from exposure to areas where infected dogs may have previously walked since this virus lives in the soil for years. Since she has been under the weather for a week or so I think it's a good idea for her to be seen by your vet. She may just be adjusting to her new environment and missing her friends, but any abrupt change in behavior is a good reason for her to be examined. It could signal a developing condition or oncoming illness and by getting her seen now you'll be on top of whatever is happening before it progresses.

Poor Monty! This is definitely concerning as nasal discharge, especially when it is not clear, can be an indication of an infection. Puppies tend to be at a higher risk. Usually these infections affect the upper respiratory tract (nasal passages and trachea) but can spread to the lungs and cause serious damage. Monty needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine the cause and start the appropriate treatment.
