My 3-week puppy fed goat milk is vomiting and cold. What should I do?

It is possible there is an issue that is causing your puppies to vomit up what they are eating. You may see other issues such as lethargy or failure to grow in addition. It is best to have them examined by your local vet to check for any illness or deformities that may be causing the puppies to become ill.

Inhalation of even a small amount of milk in a tiny little puppy like this can be deadly if treatment is not instituted right away. Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in bottle babies. If you are noting significant coughing / choking, I would also keep an eye out for increased respiratory noises. This would include wheezing and raspy hoarse noises. If you hear this, it would probably be a good idea to stop feeding until you get him to the vet. At that point, the doctor will decide if providing additional nutrition orally is worth the risk, versus injectable nutrition. Hope this is help.

Monitor the puppy and if it continues then the puppy should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, parasite, etc. causing her to vomit and your vet can prescribe medications to help treat.

At almost six weeks old, the puppies should start weaning and you can leave them out a puppy mush. I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry puppy food only. As for the mother, I would be concerned that she could be vomiting due to a postpartum complication such as eclampsia or mastitis. It would be best for her to see a vet immediately to be safe.

Leo should be receiving puppy milk replacer and not another kind of milk such as cow's milk which is not well digestible and may cause stomach upset. If Leo is receiving milk replacer and is vomiting after eating, I would try feeding smaller amounts more frequently. If that doesn't help, he may need to see his veterinarian for an exam and to rule out causes of vomiting such as viral or parasitic infections. I hope this helps and best wishes to you and Leo!

It is very serious that Brownis is vomiting and shivering, and this can be a sign of a post-whelping complication such as a metritis (an infection). This causes vomiting and fever (shivering can indicate a fever). If she has it, the puppies may suffer from ingesting toxins passed in the milk, and it is therefore not safe to let nurse. You will have to bottle feed them if she has metritis, and you will need to get puppy formula from the grocery store. You can also get it from your vet, and I would take Brownie and her puppies into a vet immediately. She needs veterinary attention now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
