My puppy sleeps on the cold floor. Is this causing her loose stool?

Poor Belle! I'm not sure if she is up to date her deworming treatments, but if she isn't, that is a common cause of loose stools in puppies. Get a deworming treatment from the vet to get her up to date on them if she isn't. Teething can cause a puppy to be very lethargic and not want to eat much. I recommend getting her some teething chew toys that you can put in the freezer. Have a cold and hard toy will be soothing to her sore gums, and you can get one of these from the pet store. I would try softening her dry food by soaking it in gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth, which may tempt her to eat. You can also try feeding her small amounts of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice. Hopefully, these methods will ease her gums and tempt Belle to eat.

If his stool is clear of any parasitic, bacterial or viral infection, then I would consider a new diet. I would consider a sensitive stomach formula such as Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Gradually transition to the new food over 5 or so days. If this does not help within 2 weeks, then you may want to consider a prescription low fat and highly digestible diet from his veterinarian. These include parasites/worms, other infectious agents (coccidia, giardia) poor food quality, viruses, bacteria from eating garbage or raw meat, food intolerance/allergy (less likely in such a young puppy), or underlying organ diseases such as liver disease, etc. Since Europe is happy, healthy and eating, the most likely cause is either that you are feeding raw meat, or even more likely, a worm that wasn't covered by your dewormer. I recommend you have a fecal sample taken to your vet to check it for eggs and other things like coccidia and giardia. Treatments for these are different so getting an answer is important. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Rusty isn't feeling well. I recommend taking Rusty to the vet with a fresh stool sample. There is a possibility he has microscopic intestinal parasites. This is common in puppies and causes diarrhea. I would not change his food as that is likely to make the loose stool worse. There is no deworming medicine that treats all parasites so even if he has been dewormed, it doesn't mean there isn't something there. Good luck and kisses to Rusty!

One deworming medication does not typically kill all possible parasites. It is worth having his veterinarian perform fecal testing to ensure parasites are not contributing to his diarrhea. Dairy products can cause loose stools in some animals, so I would discontinue the cheese. There are a variety of causes of diarrhea, so I would recommend following-up with your veterinarian since their plan of action didn't resolve the issue. Stella may need to be screened for intestinal parasites or placed on a different diet or have an increase in fiber in her current diet. You can try a teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day with meals as a fiber source.

If her stool looks normal than it could be related to the cold temperatures. She could also have a problem with her back or hips causing pain so you could have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn't a medical reason. If it is related to the cold temperature outside, you could put a coat or sweater on her and some doggie boots and see if that helps at all.
