New puppy care: Why do puppies shake? Feeding & potty training tips?

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Seizures can be detrimental to a dog's health and this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

There could be a couple of reasons why Rosie is shivering. Shivering could be caused by pain, fever, anxiety, or nervousness. Given she recently saw the vet and had had no problems, I would suspect nervousness might be the cause. She's new to your home, and that is a stressful adjustment. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise acting normal, I would not be too concerned about it. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about your pug puppy. I would recommend bringing him to a veterinarian for evaluation. When I hear of a puppy having this type of sign after a meal (if it is repeated, not just one isolated incident) I worry about a portosystemic liver shunt which you can read at here https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952622. If the shivering is just random or didn't recur it could be due to being cold, being scared or in pain, or a neurological issue. An exam is recommended if the shivering continues to help ascertain if the dog has a medical problem.

Weakness and shaking can sometimes be a sign of nutrient/blood chemical problems, but shaking can also be a sign of nerves, cold, etc. If you do suspect an issue, bringing Sugar into the vet for an exam and blood work to check her values is best.

Puppies typically nurse every 2-4 hours until 3-4 weeks old then it can be every 4-6 hours. If he has a good suckle reflex that is a good sign and he is probably hungry. You will use puppy milk replacement until he is weaned which generally starts around 4-5 weeks of age the. Transition to soft puppy food and decrease milk feedings. They do have to stay warm. Their normal body temperature is 100 so that can be a sign if shaking. You have to gently wipe their behind and probates to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. This should be done after every meal. They generally sleep a lot and as they get older and more coordinated then they stay awake longer

She needs to continue to eat puppy food which is high in calories and will help keep her from becoming hypocalcemic. She should not need supplemental calcium unless the vet has currently diagnosed her with hypocalcemia. She may be shaking because she is in discomfort from her recent labor. Keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs and if the shaking continues you may want to give the calcium you got from your vet the last time she had an episode just to hold her over until she can be seen to make sure low calcium is truly the issue here. Shaking is a general sign and can be seen with several things that go from just being cold or nervous to being an indication of pain or discomfort. If he is otherwise fine, then it would be ok to monitor him for now. However, if at any point he appears to be in discomfort or stops eating or showing any other concerning symptoms, it may be best to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment.
