My puppies are pooping worms after dewormer. Is this a good sign?

Congratulations on your new puppy. I have a dog named Hayden too! I suspect what you are seeing are roundworms. They are commonly passed in the stool after deworming, so you are correct that it just means that the medication is working. There is really no limit. Sometimes you can see a pile of worms after deworming, but this is not a problem. It's actually good to know that they are all out of there. The only concern with too many worms is that they can get stuck in the intestines when they all die at once and potentially cause a blockage. This would be obvious, because Nitro would stop defecating, stop eating, feel really bad and likely vomit. This is a rare occurrence, but good to keep an eye out for. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parasite eggs are microscopic so I'm wondering if what you're seeing in the stool is actually eggs. It could be adult roundworms or even tapeworm eggs. It is not uncommon to see the adult roundworms as they are killed by the deworming process. If it is tapeworm eggs, you may need to end up treating for fleas (as this is how tapeworms are spread). The Dolpac should help treat for tapeworms and the praziquantel should be effective for giardia and roundworms. It is possible that you may end up needed to retreat but I suspect what you are seeing may be normal for the deworming process. Definitely take a fecal sample back to your veterinarian in about 3 weeks to ensure the infection is cleared. Also the prevent reinfection make sure to clean up your dogs feces from the yard. If at any time Echo seems to be acting ill or has diarrhea I would take her back to your veterinarian.

It's possible it could also be a hookworm. This can be a normal occurrence after deworming. And I would recommend deworming again in 2 weeks. No need to be concerned. Yes, the Interceptor Plus will affect adult worms but not larvae that are migrating. Dewormers can cause a"purge" of dead or dying adult intestinal parasites. You should have Rocket dewormed again in 2-3 weeks. Contact your veterinarian for a broad spectrum dewormer to clear emerging adults. Nemex or Panacur can be dispensed by your vet based on your dog's weight.

If she is pooping out worms, that means that the dewormer is working. She may need to be dewormed several times due to the life cycle of the worms. I would also recommend having a fecal exam done at a veterinary clinic since not all dewormers kill all types of worms and parasites. Many pets can be infected with multiple types of worms at the same time.

No, it's not necessary for a dog to vomit or have diarrhea after being dewormed. It's a side effect but it doesn't happen to all dogs. A lot of times, the only sign of worms in dogs is eggs in the poop, which are microscopic. It will still be working even if you don't see worms in Ember's poop.
