Hello, sorry to hear about Zeus. His nasal planum does apear dry and crusted. Possible causes can include a mild superficial skin infection, allergies, or even nutritional deficiencies. Other more severe causes such as an upper respiratory tract infection or distemper may also cause this. I would recommend having him seen by his veterinarian to ensure he does not have anything more serious.

At this time, you do not need to limit his water consumption even if he is eating his links. As growing puppy he should be eating a puppy diet and have readily access to water at all times. Please have Zeus seen by his veterinarian especially if you note any sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy or loss of appetite. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog has a dry, crusty nose. Is it serious and what should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Murphy. A common condition known as hyperkeratosis can cause a crusty nose. This is more of a cosmetic probelm and may be what his veterinarian was referring to at your last appointment. If the nose cracks, bleeds or the pigment changes to white or pink though, this is concerning. It can indicate an autoimmune disease. This would need to be diagnosed with a biopsy. In the first scenario, I usually will treat with a topical ointment to dissolve the extra skin or keratin. You need to wear gloves when applying it though as it can dissolve the skin on your finger tips. His veterinarian will be able to prescribe this ointment. I hope this information helps!

My dog has a crusty, dry nose and noisy breathing. What's the cause?

Poor Thunder. He likely has an upper respiratory infection going on. Infectious disease (i.e. Distemper) are also possible if he is also acting unwell. I would highly recommend taking Thunder to your local vet by morning for a good thorough exam and auscultation of his lungs to ensure his lower airway isn't affected as well. Best case scenario, he will need a short of antibiotics to get him back to normal. Best wishes with Thunder and his care moving forward. Take care.

Why is my dog suddenly lethargic, shaking, won't drink, dry nose?

Poor Zeus! It sounds like he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infections, parasite, metabolic/endocrine disease, musculoskeletal pain, etc. and your vet can run lab-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem. Please call your vet and have him seen as soon as possible.

Why is my large dog's nose crusty and discolored on one side?

When dogs have nasal discharge on one side only it indicates a problem in that nostril or sinus. They can get pieces of grass or seeds in their nose that can cause this in addition to a nasal polyp or tumor. This looks infected so I recommend a veterinary exam. They may need to sedate Bowser to flush out and examine in the nostril, the throat and may need an X-ray of his sinus. Often flushing out or removing an object will cure this. If it’s a polyp or mass removing some of it to get a biopsy and diagnosis may be needed. Antibiotics may be prescribed as well for the infection. My puppy has a dry nose, is wheezing, and lethargic. Is he sick?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Percy is adorable! From the second picture it looks like he has a respiratory infection. A dry or wet nose doesn’t tell us a lot about their health but dogs shouldn’t have green discharge from the nose. I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam. They may need to take an X-ray to make sure it’s not in his lungs. They can also start him on antibiotics for the infection. Good luck and kisses to Percy!

Why is my dog's nose dry, crusty, and raised on the top surface?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding T-Bone. The picture is a little blurry, but he may have a condition known as hyperkeratosis of the nasal planum. If so, his veterinarian can prescribe an ointment to dissolve the roughened skin. It is a common condition and does not cause the dog any harm. I hope this information helps!

My dog has a crusty nose and discharge, but acts normal. Should I worry?

She could have an infection or possibly an auto-immune disease. Since this has been going on for 2 weeks, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and other medications to help treat.
