My puppy won't eat or get up after lawn chemicals. Is she sick?

Oh dear! Poor Blue. I'm afraid this sounds quite serious. My first concern, with the symptoms you are describing and her age, is that she may have parvo - especially if her previous owners did not provide you with any paperwork showing that she had received her full series of vaccines. This is a serious, life-threatening illness that is unfortunately quite common in puppies. Other possible causes of her symptoms could include an intestinal obstruction, a serious infection of some kind, or ingestion of something toxic. Regardless of the underlying cause, these symptoms are serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency vet tonight. He/she can do some diagnostic testing to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment right away.

If you know for sure that she got into a plant, you can contact the ASPCA poison control (https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control) which will help your veterinarian treat her. If you're not sure that she got into a plant, I would take her to your nearest emergency vet today. Puppies can get very sick from a number of different diseases and will get sicker faster than adult dogs. Puppies can quickly have problems getting dehydrated, having low blood sugar and having problems regulating their temperature when they get sick. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Joie! From your pictures Joie seems to be pretty sick. Causes for vomiting and lethargy in a young lab: foreign body ingestion where she ate something that is stuck in her stomach or intestines, a virus like Parvo virus especially if she is unvaccinated, intestinal parasites, toxins, etc. It is probably best to have her seen as an emergency today. You can try to fast her: no food (and no grass) for 12 hours. Hold on water for 4 hours and if no vomiting offer ice cubes. If she continues to vomit while being fasted she should see a Vet today. If the vomiting subsides then starting tomorrow do "sip and nibble" of water and a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed 3 cups total per day. If she restarts vomiting with food then she should see your Vet. Good luck!!

This is an emergency. If you suspect a pesticide you should call the pet poison control helpline. Otherwise, when I see older animals present this way through the ER I am very worried about abdominal bleeding from a tumor. I would not wait. He should be see by a vet ASAP.

I'm very sorry to hear that Peanut isn't feeling good. Unfortunately with the symptoms you have described, especially the lethargy and diarrhea, I am very concerned about what he may have eaten. Any number of plants etc can potentially be poisonous, including mushrooms. I would check your yard (or wherever you weee with Peanut when all this started) for mushrooms or any other types of plants. Look also for indications of any other items-has something been spilled or sprayed on the grass? Are there other pieces of whatever Peanut may have eaten lying around? I know you mentioned financial concerns, unfortunately with the symptoms you describe I feel the best thing is for Peanut to go see a veterinarian. Given such a rapid decline through the day today I am very concerned about how Peanut will progress from here. If you simply cannot make it to the ER then monitor Peanut closely overnight, try and tempt him to eat and drink, and make sure to take him outside frequently to relieve himself. Schedule an appointment with your regular veterinarian first thing in the morning. I hope Peanut's condition improves for you!

I am very concerned about your dog's condition and highly recommend a veterinary visit. There are a few general categories that fit with what your dog is showing at home. One would be weakness due to a nerve problem in the back end. This can happen if a disc has moved out of place in the spine and is pressing on the spinal cord. This can cause dogs to have trouble walking and placing their feet in an appropriate way. Some have the appearance of walking on their toes. Otherwise they are able to place weight on the back legs but stagger or sway when walking. This can be an emergency situation if the disc slips more into the spinal cord and causes paralysis. Another type of weakness that causes trouble getting up is if there is a lack of proper blood circulation. The lower level of blood in the body causes them to be lethargic due to the decreased oxygen circulating throughout the body. In an older dog, the most common cause of this is with a tumor or mass on the spleen that has ruptured. The spleen holds a large amount of blood and if it has a rupture, the blood leaks out into the abdomen. In addition to the lethargy, we often see pale gums and a pot belly appearance due to the pooling blood. An x-ray or ultrasound would help determine if this is occurring. These are the two most common reasons for such a dramatic change in her appearance. There is also the chance of her eating something she shouldn't. The best thing for her would be to have an exam as soon as you are able to determine what is causing her signs. The vet may recommend bloodwork or an x-ray. Unfortunately. older large breed dogs can lose nerve function in their back legs due to age changes. There is little we can do to help this aside from keeping them comfortable. Due to how sudden the signs showed up, this is less likely, as it is often a more gradual change.

Poor Puchku sounds pretty sick at the moment! I'm not sure if he is vaccinated or not, but if he isn't, he could be suffering form parvo. He could also have a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. I would have him seen by a vet for these symptoms. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms and can treat him for it. I hope this helps!
