My puppy has a large gash on his inner thigh. What should I do?

Ouch - poor pup! This wound looks quite deep, so yes - I would definitely recommend a vet visit. This may need stitches, depending on how long ago it happened, and your pup will certainly need antibiotics to prevent it from becoming infected while it heals.

The skin is quite far apart, it will take quite a long time to heal and there is risk of infection. I recommend to take him at the vet to have I'm checked, have the hair trimmed, the area throughly cleaned l to have a proper look at the wounds and decide the next step. Hi and thanks for posting! You can try washing the area with soap and water a couple times a day and keeping it as clean and dry as possible. It looks like Bear has been licking the area frequently which may be a reason why it is not healing as easily, so I would try and keep an E-Collar on her to prevent her from licking and bothering the lesion. Certainly, if despite your best efforts it is not healing properly or is worsening, Bear should see his veterinarian to have the lesion evaluated. This wound requires an immediate check up and possibly a stitch up as it seems infected and it is unlikely that will heal without immediate intervention. You should take Murphy to your local vets for an appointment as this wound should be clipped, cleaned, flushed and potentially stitched up under sedation. It would take a very long time to heal if the wound was treated with antibiotics only. The symptoms of infection usually develops in the first 24hrs and include fever, discharge, swelling and pain around the wound.

This looks more like a scrape (abrasion) than a cut. If the skin is not cut, you do not need to take him to a vet. You can disinfect the wound and put neosporin ointment on the lesion for a few days. Should the wound start to get infected and ooze pus, then you should take him for an exam and wound treatment.
