My puppy has a fever blister-like sore on its lip. What is it?

That lesion looks very inflamed. It’s possible it’s a reaction to something he chewed on but an infection is also possible. I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian to rule out something more severe like a tooth root abscess. He may also get medication to help heal the lesion. Best of luck.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sores on the lip can be caused by many different factors, but most likely is she chewed on something that has caused a wound. Other possible causes are immune diseases that attach the junction between the lip and the haired skin, however this is very unlikely given her age and the localized region. It does look like the wound might be infected however, so getting it seen by a vet to see if antibiotics are required is a good idea. If it doesn't bother her, and she is eating/drinking ok, then you can try just keeping it clean with a salt-water solution, and monitor. If it looks better every day then keep monitoring, but if it isn't better after a couple days, or looks worse at all, then bring her to a vet right away. Do not apply any medications/creams, just keep it clean with salt-water. If she is pawing/scratching at it then an E-collar to prevent more trauma can help it heal, and if it is bothering her getting it seen by a vet is a good idea. Best of luck with Ozzy!

Poor Chico! It is difficult to tell exactly what it is without seeing it in person. I would watch it closely. You can put an over the counter antibiotic ointment like Neosporin or something similar to see if it will help. If it doesn't look better within 24 hours, I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to tell exactly what it is and the best treatment to help it heal. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could have been due to a traumatic injury while playing. I think though that it would be a good idea to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The main reason is making sure that there is no other traumatic injury present that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, at least on the picture it looks fairly superficial so you can plan on applying a thin film of triple antibiotic twice daily until you see your veterinarian. Good luck!

Based on Bear's relatively young age and the photo that you have provided I would be suspicious that Bear is experiencing a mild bacterial or viral infection in this area. Puppies are often more susceptible to viruses such as the papilloma virus more than adult dogs, this virus typically forms cauliflower like growths in/around the mouth, but certain forms can be more mild and not lead to these signs. It is possible that Bear has a bacterial infection, these are usually fairly benign and self limiting. Another possibility is that Bear is experiencing sensitivity or an allergy to something in his environment leading to this lesion. Some dogs are very sensitive to certain types of food bowls or toys, and can develop these lesion secondary to this. I would recommend having Bear evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can examine the lesion and Bear's mouth. They can discuss the need for additional diagnostics such as an impression smear or gentle sampling of the area. Depending on these findings they can then make recommendations for necessary treatments such as antibiotics. Hope this helps, good luck!

This looks to be a little sore on the lip that was caused by some sort of puncture wound, scratch, etc. I would monitor it for now and perhaps use a daily water additive or oral rinse that you can get from your local pet store. If it has not resolved or worsened after 7-10 days, then its best to take Arlo to your local vet to get this checked out to make sure there isn't something underneath the skin that got stuck and can't come out (foreign body) that has caused this. Also the vet can do a complete oral exam as well to ensure the gums and mouth look ok. I hope that your fur baby gets this to heal well soon and that it is just a sore. It may just be a little boil that formed due to a mild infection or even trauma from his tooth. If it isn't bothering him then I would just keep an eye on it for the next 2-7 days to see if it resolves on its own. Most of the time these do. If it doesn't then have your vet take a look to see if treatment is needed.
