Why is my puppy's eye squinting with mucus? Is it a cold or pain?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 13 days old | 2.5 lbs

Hello, my maltipoo is about 12 weeks old and this morning he woke up with one squinting and a some mucus. Could he have a cold? I did noticed last night his nose seemed cold and wet. Still playful.

Whenever a dog is squinting an eye it means the eye is painful. Often due to an injury of some sort like a scratch on the cornea. It is not likely due to "cold".

This is something that your vet needs to see and treat appropriately. Eyes are very delicate organs and can go bad very quickly if not treated promptly. Please get Jordy to your vet for an exam as soon as you can. That way you can get the eye treated appropriately and get him some pain relief for that eye.

Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Ear infections don't usually cause eye problems in dogs so he should be examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. He could have an ear infection and an eye infection and your vet can prescribe medications to treat both conditions.
