My puppy's ears are infected. Can I use Auralgan for treatment?

You are right that there are different causes of ear infections, typically yeast and bacteria (there are many types). Ear medications prescribed are based on which of these is the problem. It is also important for their ear drum to be assessed prior to starting medications. As well, some dogs need oral medications in addition to topical if the infection is severe. Being so young is also a consideration with certain drugs. The best plan is to have your vet perform an ear cytology and assess for an intact ear drum prior to picking the best medication that is safe for Nola. Clean the ears and medicate once per day but do them at opposite times of the day (clean in the evening and medicate in the morning or vice-versa). You don't want to put the medication in the ears on top of the cleaning solution. Do both for AT LEAST 7-10 days. No, I would not do this and please do not use any hydrogen peroxide in his ears. The herbal oil could be making the ear infection worse, so I would stop using that. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or ear mites, so you need to take Peyton into the vet first thing Monday. The vet can diagnose the cause of his ear infection, and can prescribe a safe and effective treatment for it. The only effective and safe medications for ear infections are available at the vet. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Oral medications (ie: antibiotics) do not work well for ear infections. Any medication to treat an ear infection should be used topically (inside the ear). Oral pain medication would probably be helpful but you would need to get those from your vet. In my opinion, if the ear is that painful you really should take him to your vet now for an examination so they can use the scope to look into the ear and also test the ear discharge to see what the infection is composed of (bacteria or yeast or both). They will also be able to see if the ear drum is intact. Some medications are contraindicated if the ear drum is ruptured. Cyclobenzaprine is NOT recommended for use in dogs. It has a very narrow margin of safety in dogs (and cats) and can cause significant central nervous system (CNS) and cardiovascular (CV) adverse effects. You should NOT use it. If you want to try to treat the ear at home, which I do not recommend, you can use this specific over the counter ear medication linked below. It is once a day and you do not have to clean the ear out first. It contains an anti-inflammatory (hydrocortisone) that should help with inflammation/pain. It is a small bottle so you will likely need at least 2 (if not 3) to do a full course of treatment. You must be sure to get the medication all the way down into the ear canal or it will not help much. If you chose to do this and there is no improvement in 4-5 days then you must take him to your vet for an exam. If he does seem to be improving then continue once daily for at least 14 days. Hello, these medications may be safe to use in dogs with ear infections. It sounds like Fred may have an ear hematoma which means there is a pocket of blood within the ear. This likely requires draining and bandaging to resolve, although, in severe cases they may need surgery as well. You may instill these medications into his ear, although if you don't think he has an infection, then he may not need them. Ideally, Fred should be seen sooner rather than later. The ear has a poor blood supply, so the medications used to treat the ear infection have to be topical and applied in the ear. In addition, ear infections are caused by yeast and ear mites in addition to bacteria, so the cause has to be diagnosed in order to treat it correctly. Sorry to hear that Chance is so uncomfortable. It is difficult to tell you what to treat the ear with without knowing what is wrong. If you are unable to get a traditional muzzle on him, you might consider getting chance a basket style muzzle. Most dogs tend to like these and tolerate them much better as they are not so constraining. You can also train dogs to enjoy muzzle. Putting them on can be made in to a game. The best way to accomplish this is by first just holding the muzzle while giving your dog treats. Eventually, you want to stick your hand through the muzzle and give him the treats. Slowly, you want to move your hand back out the muzzle getting your dog's head close and closer to inside of it. Eventually, place the treat on top of the muzzle. I am sure you see where I am going with this. It can take some time, but I find this to be the most effective way to get dogs to not mind the muzzle. Back to the ear. I can not tell you for sure whether or not there is a bacterial infection, fungal infection, inflammatory reaction, or some sort of allergic reaction occurring. As a result, you'd have to just throw the whole kitchen sink at it. You would also have to know that by putting a wash or drug inside the ear without a vet looking at it, you will not be sure if the ear drum is in tact.
