My puppy's dew claw is bent and hurts when I touch it, what now?

You can take him to your veterinary office and ask them to cut the nail back to promote normal growth, or you can monitor the toe and see if the nail grows out naturally. They can consider removing the dew claw to take the source of pain away or it can be treated with pain medications and antibiotics for instance. You should take her to the vet as the broken piece may need to be removed. The vet can also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection and pain medication to help manage the discomfort. Soaking her paw in a warm Epsom Salt solution might also help.

I would recommend doing a light bandage wrap of the area using cast padding and an elastic bandage for now. Then in the morning have a professional take a look at it. They will have to cut the nail pretty much all the way down to where it is bent, this will cause some bleeding and mild-moderate temporary discomfort, which they can then apply the appropriate anti-coagulant, typically Quik-stop, to the area and wrap it for a couple of days until the area is no longer painful.. If there is significant swelling of the nail base then they may prescribe anti-inflammatories.

There are two choices: 1) take your dog to the vet and have the ripped claw removed. 2) Observe and it may heal, but it also may get infected and then you would need to take your dog to the vet to have the claw removed.

If you don't that will be a chronic source of pain and infection. Be very careful doing this as it is painful and Ryder may bite. Have someone help you. Pull hard and fast. It may bleed.
