It is possible for dogs to contract West Nile Virus (WNV) but they typically do not develop symptoms and it does not appear to cause any overt clinical symptoms in dogs, or cats for that matter. Lethargy, decreased appetite and fever are among some of the symptoms that can be seen with WNV infection. I hope this helps! In general, viruses are species specific. However, with this being a new virus (or so they believe) it cannot be known at this time if the virus can make the jump between species. I recommend to take the same precautions with her as you do yourself. I hope this helps.

Heart worm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. This is by far the biggest concern for diseases spread by mosquitos that we see in dogs. Dogs are quite resistant to developing disease from west nile virus, so while they can technically become infected, they don't get sick. Dogs do not get malaria from mosquitos. There is another form of malaria that affects dogs that is spread by ticks. Ticks can also transmit a number of other diseases to dogs, including lyme disease, and many other diseases. This type of virus usually affects very young or immuno- compromised dogs and cats and in my experience this possibility is not likely at all, especially in healthy patients. A vaccination exists for them as well as for us. I would recommend to have this matter discussed with your local veterinarian, as no course of action (a part from normal hygiene measures like wash your hands) may be needed.

I would not be overly concerned with one tick, especially if he had his vaccination. We can, however, depending on your geographical location have other diseases (such as rocky mountain spotted fever or anaplasmosis or ehrlichia. These aren't extremely common but are possible. If you notice any lethargy/decreased appetite or lameness in Champ then I would recommend bringing him in to the vet for an examination and letting them know about the tick exposure. I would also talk to your vet about starting a good tick preventative to prevent ticks in the future.

If your cat is vaccinated, it is highly unlikely that she would contract parvovirus. Washing your hands several times also will greatly decrease risk of spread. It is likely there is no cause for concern.
