New Pomeranian & Husky: Will they get along? Can they share a crate?

Puppies learn to explore with their mouth. Luckily she is young and can be trained with patience and consistency. First, make sure you have lots of treats handy. Second, have lots of toys handy. When you are playing with Luna and she starts to bite you, make a high pitched squeal. When she stops biting, tell her good girl and give her a treat or toy. When she chews on the toy, tell her shes a good girl. She will get the hang of it. For the crate, you need to get her used to it slowly. When you are home, feed her in there without closing the door. Put treats and toys in there so she can come and go when she likes. Slowly build up to closing the door for short periods. Give treats when shes calm inside the crate. Start with the puppy confined in one room of the house, with a child gate in between. Let them see each other, sniff through the mesh. After a day or two, move to feeding them within sight of one another. Swap their bedding, one for the other, so they can both get used to the other's scent. When the puppy is not confined behind the child gate, have him on a leash so the resident dog has freedom. Let them sniff and interact. There may be some growling, but that is part of their establishing boundaries and their place in the hierarchy. You're the top dog, so if a confrontation develops, you stop it. If you think your adult dog will be too aggressive, have someone hold him on a leash as well. Squabbles will happen as they find their place in the new way of things, but as long as it's just noise and display, let them work it out. If your husky is ordinarily good with other dogs, I don't think you'll have too much trouble.

If either Molly or Belle are timid you may want to first introduce them through a barrier like a baby gate. Otherwise it's probably fine for them to meet face to face with supervision - plan to keep this first visit pretty short and then give them both a break. You can gradually increase the time they spend together depending on how the interactions are going. I would recommend having them sleep in separate crates so they each have their own space.

Keeping the new puppy by itself in the crate and slowly increasing his access as he is more reliable in the house is a good transition for both the new pup and your older dog. It is best to not crate them together as the crate can be an area of contention and a fight may break out with one or both pets unable to escape. Slow introductions of short, monitored, play sessions followed by breaks with the new puppy in a playpen or gated off area is a good way to get the two used to each other. If one or both dogs gets too stressed, separating them in different rooms or crates for a period of time until they've calmed down is best.

The most important thing you can do, if they do not already know each other, is to introduce them on neutral territory where neither of them has been before. That will avoid the initial "territorial" problem if one dog is brought into the new home with the other dog already there. I would suggest neutering the intact male, several weeks before the transfer if possible. A well-bred Siberian (and that could be the iffy part for you, depending on where he comes from) is not usually aggressive towards other dogs. I have had Siberians with Finnish Spitz, Norwegian Elkhounds, German Shepherd Dogs, and Belgian Malinois over a forty-year span and never had a problem. Be sure that the resident dog's schedule changes as little as possible, as the more his environment becomes disorganized the more upset he'll be. You can bring over a towel that the new dog has slept on for a sort of pre-meet 'n' greet so that the scent is familiar. I generally recommend crate training for bigger dogs for house training as it helps establish a routine and a safe space for them. Make sure the crate is big enough for him to stand up and turn around but not much bigger than that. Try to keep to a schedule in terms of taking him outside, feeding him, and putting him in the crate every day. Huskies can be kind of vocal so he may protest a little bit at first. Having the radio or TV on to provide some background noise may help make him feel less alone.
