My old dog is barely eating or drinking. Is he suffering or dying?

 Brown Dog Foundation provides funding to families with a sick pet that would likely respond to treatment, but due to circumstances, there is not enough money immediately available to pay. IMOM is dedicated to insure that no companion animal has to be euthanized simply because their caretaker is financially challenged. I hope one of these resources helps you afford a vet. I'm sorry Petey isn't doing well! It does sound like his health is declining, and given his symptoms of not eating and drinking, going to the bathroom inside, and being very lethargic, I would speak to his vet about letting him go peacefully. Hi Phil! I'm so sorry that Cubby is so ill! You can try giving him Nutri-cal, available over the counter perhaps at your local pet store, but it is honestly unlikely to help him walk again. He is extremely sick from the fluid around his heart, and he needs veterinary treatment now. If you can't afford it, in all honestly, the best option is to let him go peacefully via euthanasia. I have no doubt that you don't want to hear this, but he is suffering and it isn't fair to allow him to continue in this manner. His quality of life is quite poor. Poor Oscar, I suspect he might be suffering with kidney disease. This is a common cause for increase thirst and urination in elderly cars. In order to stop progression of kidney disease you should not give him metacam anymore and opt to have a different form of pain relief. It is hard to answer your question, in a way his body is shutting down but it might take a week to get worse and another 3-5days for him to go. During those 5 days he will not eat, he will probably vomit and be in pain as not allowed to have/not taking his medications. My suggestion is to try to do something with your vet to help him feel better and if he should continue to deteriorate, not eat /drink a lot then let him go peacefully. Oh no, poor Connor! It is possible that it may be his time, or there may be something that can help him. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain, but I would take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now. The vet can determine if there is something that can be done to help him, or the vet can help him pass peacefully via euthanasia.

I cannot comment on whether or not it is time to euthanize Sasha since I have never done an exam on her. With her not eating, drinking and urinating in herself, then you have to look at her quality of life. I would talk to your vet to see if there is anything that could help her or if her bloodwork looked too bad. You may talk to your vet about medicine for cognitive disorder (dementia) like anipryl and omega 3 fatty acids. Also, you can add a medicine that helps with incontinence (urinating while sleeping) called proin that may help. Finally, if she is weak and not able to get around and her bloodwork looks good, you may want to talk to your vet about medicines for arthritis. Thee are also appetite stimulants and anti-nausea medicines that usually work really well in animals too. I hope you are able to find a way to keep her comfortable for a little while longer. But also know if your vet says she will not improve, please take comfort in knowing you gave her a long wonderful life. I hope this helps. Hugs!
