Why are my newborn puppies screaming constantly? Does their mom hear?

Puppies cry when they want something like to eat or attention, or possibly to go outside. They are a little young to know how to be properly potty trained. I would make sure the mom is nursing then properly and everyone is properly gaining weight. I would make sure there isn't another reason they could be crying. With them being so young, I would be careful letting them spend too much time in the environment because they are at high risk for different illnesses since their immune system is weak and they haven't had their shots. Puppies usually cry when they are hungry or cold. Make sure she is latching and that mama dog has milk. Also open the puppies mouth and make sure the roof of the mouth looks normal- and no cleft palate. You may need to go buy puppy milk replacer and bottles. Excessive crying can be a sign of a health issue, so I would have him seen by a vet immediately (take along his mother and siblings as well). Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and very susceptible to cold and low blood sugar, so any potential problems with them need to be check out by a vet right away to give them their best chance at survival. His crying could signify problems in feeding (not getting enough milk), cold, or low blood sugar. Please take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! They could jut be more vocal during the day because of all the activity. I would try to keep them indoors where there is air conditioning and fans. If they have to be outdoors then they should be in the shade and not ever in the direct sun. The puppies should not get too hot as that is life threatening, so see what you can do to the environment to change the ambient temperature. I wouldn't recommend the ambient temperature higher than 80 F. I wish you the very best!

They will make noise or wiggle when nursing. Especially if they aren't getting milk or are not positioned properly. Do not stress. Most bitches will nurse their litters uneventfully. You can monitor each puppy's weight to ensure adequate feeding and weight gain.

This does not seem normal but I don't have a good explanation for it, and I would recommend rechecking with your vet. She could have a uterine infection or inflammation, or other post partum problems and blood work might be recommended as the next step.

Hello, and thank you for your question! Congratulations on your new puppies. I wouldn't be worried that your one pup is very vocal. Babies all behave slightly differently, and this goes for puppies as well. Most likely she is asking for something when she vocalizes: for example, milk, or warmth. I would observe mum and pups from a distance over the next few days, to make sure that the vocal pup is getting what she needs when she calls. If not, you can gently position her closer to mum's nipples in case she is looking for milk. As an aside, you can start offering commercial puppy food (softened kibble with water) around 4 weeks. They can be fully weaned off moms milk at 8 weeks. I hope this helps, and that your little family is doing well!
