What do newborn Dachshund puppies look like right after birth?

These look more like a Shih Tzu than a dachshund. It’s awfully early to be able to tell for sure. They don’t look as long bodied as a dachshund and the thicker coat and rounder snout look more like a Shih Tzu. They are adorable regardless. You can always get a DNA test done. Hello. If Candy is a pretty normal weight, then you can continue her regular dog food up until a week before her due date. Then gradually switch her over to a puppy food. She should be strictly on a puppy diet by the time the puppies are born. Keep her on the puppy food until the puppies start to eat on their own, around 4-5 weeks of age, & you can then gradually switch her back to her regular food. That’s hard to say. The breeder could be right as some females do experience changes in the haircoats related to pregnancy. It can also be a sign of parasites, poor nutrition or bad breeding. I recommend to ask the breeder questions about nutrition, issues with skin mites, any hereditary problems or other conditions in her line of dogs. You may also see if you can connect with some previous clients who have her puppies. This may help you to make the best decision. Best of luck.

Dachshunds can sure hurt their backs but honestly it is not that common to happen in a young 8 week old puppy. If he seems fine and not in pain then he is probably fine. When they injure their back they are very obviously in pain. If you are truly worried about Lenny there is no harm in having your vet check him out. Eye color in puppies this young can be very variable, sometimes appearing completely black when first opening. The eye color is likely to change as they grow older and into their own. As long as you do not see any discharge or cloudiness associated with the eyes, the color should not be something to be concerned with. Just make sure all the other puppy's eyes are opening relatively soon and look relatively normal. Good luck with your pups!
