Neutered dog mated yesterday. Is she pregnant? Is he infected/swollen?

Hello. It is tough to tell without an x-ray or ultrasound exam. It is very possible that the male still had viable sperm in his reproductive tract ( sperm can remain viable for 3-4 weeks in the accessory sex glands of a recently neutered male ). Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. The good news is that your male dog was neutered. While neutered male dogs *can* mate with in heat females, they do so uncommonly and obviously can't impregnate the female. The fact that Bella and her housemate were only alone for a few minutes makes penetration unlikely, as this usually takes some time when dogs "tie" during the mating process. Even if your male did mate with Bella, there is no cause for concern! However, keep an eye out on your male dog to see if he's been licking the skin around his penis excessively. Salivary staining can lead to a reddish-brown discoloration of the fur, which can look a little bit like blood. If he's licking a lot, it would be best to take him to see his vet in case he's starting to develop a skin infection.

A recently neutered male dog may potentially impregnate a receptive female for as long as one month after surgery. Sperm is produced in the testicles then mixes with seminal fluid in the prostate. It is possible for those sperm to survive for as long as a month after the testes, which replenish the supply, are removed. Additionally, testosterone levels are still high in the male and he will want mate with a receptive female until those levels decline.

Figo needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. He could have a blood clot to his testicles or even they could be rotated cutting off the blood supply. He could also have an infection. All these causes can call significant pain as well as need immediate surgical intervention. Do not give him any pain medication at home as it can be very toxic to dogs.

If he was neutered a long time ago this is probably a dominant behavior not related to the sex hormones. If he was castrated recently he could have made her pregnant as the sperm may survive in various storage areas of the male reproduction tract for up to 6 weeks after neutering. It is probably a good idea to have the incision checked since tying with a female is certainly more activity than he is supposed to have the first week after surgery. He also needs to stay well away from all unspayed females for 6-8 weeks while the testosterone continues to leave his system.
