Why is my male dog suddenly marking inside after being house-trained?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

You have one probable and another possible problem. Trappy has discovered his male self and has begun to mark his territory. Additionally, there may be a bitch in heat somewhere in the general vicinity of your house (a dog can detect the scent of a bitch in season from quite a distance away). He is at the ideal age to be neutered, so I would suggest that first of all. Then, you need to re-housetrain him. Put him on a leash and take him outside to his designated spot. Do not walk around. Just stand there and repeat "go outside" or a similar phrase. As soon as he starts to go, repeat "go outside" and praise "good dog!" as he goes. When he is finished, or if you think he has stopped before his bladder is empty, or he does not go after a reasonable amount of time, bring him directly back inside. Do not remove the leash. Attach it to your belt loop and keep him with you. Don’t let him out of your sight! When you see him start to circle or sniff, take him right outdoors again and repeat the process. If he does mess in the house, do not scold him unless you actually catch him in the act. In that case, say "NO!" and take him right outside. Tell him to "go outside" and praise as he finishes. If he is not neutered this can be a behavioral issue. I would recommend neutering him immediately to hopefully stop this behavior. I would also recommend crate training him. You must choose a crate that Hachi can stand up, sit down and turn around. A crate should only create a positive environment. Never use the crate for punishment. Despite what many people think do not line the crate with blankets or beds. Keeping Hachi in the crate when you cannot keep 100% eye on him is important. Every time you take him out of the crate take him on a walk to make sure they go to the bathroom and give positive reinforcement if he does. If they do not eliminate while you are outside then put Hachi back in the crate for another 20minutes. After 20 minutes take him out once again to try. If Hachi does go to the bathroom make sure you take time to play with him and when you have to turn your back again put them back in the crate. I hope this helps. I am sorry that you are having to go through this! If I read the question correctly.... They were both not having accidents for an entire year and then it started again... That certainly seems strange. The first thing that I like to do is rule out a medical problem, especially in Scooter. Kidney problems, bladder infections, diabetes, Cushings Dz are just a few of the conditions that can cause excess urination. If he has a medical problem and is urinating in the house, your puppy might be just thinking it is ok to urinate in the house. I would try to see if you can figure out if it is small puddles very often or larger puddles. The veterinarian can collect a urine sample and run a urinalysis to help diagnose a problem. They may see something like a low specific gravity (concentration of urine) and need to run blood work. You can also take your puppy in to have a urinalysis done as well. If it is not a medical problem, then you will have to try to re-train them. The puppy will most likely be easier. I would recommend going back to crate training. The places where the accidents have happened have to be cleaned very well. You may need to keep Scooter in a small room with an easy to clean floor when your are gone. Good Luck! I would recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out a urinary tract infection or other lower urinary disease like bladder stones. Even though you’re not seeing blood these wouodnbe common causes of sudden inappropriate urination and its important to rule out a medical condition first. If Pog’s urine and other testing is normal you can discuss restarting house training with your vet.

Inappropriate urination occurs when a dog regresses to urinating inside the house. This behavior is more common in male dogs that have not been neutered, although it can occur in non-neutered dogs and cats. The first thing to rule out is inappropriate urination that occurs when there is an underlying health problem which is causing a dog to urinate inside the house. It may have lost control of the muscles in its bladder or sphincter, or there may be an infection (UTI) or other condition as drinking too much (seen in many medical conditions) that is making it difficult for the dog to hold it in long enough to get outside. When a medical caused has been ruled out we can think about the second type of inappropriate urination which is behavioral (such as marking).
