My male husky is acting weird. Do male dogs really go into heat?

Hello. Male cats do not go into heat. That term refers to the estrus cycle of a female cat. Male cats that are not neutered are always ready to mate. If his behavior changes, he may simply be responding to a female cat that is in heat . The only way to stop his mating behavior is to have him neutered surgically. If he is not neutered, the testosterone he has pumping through his body can cause the behaviors you have described in more frequency than neutered males. It is highly unlikely this is a true heat unless the first one was very short (3-5days; often referred to as a split heat). I would be concerned she may have an infection which the male is confused by. A full vet check and possibly a sample of the fluid being passed to be examined under a microscope would be recommended in order to determine exactly what is going on and to treat appropriately

Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.

Unfortunately if he is acting like this due to a female being in heat then the only way to stop this is by neutering him. If this is always occurring I would recommend a trainer coming to your home to evaluate him but my concern is that it is from a female being in heat. If you know it is past time for her to be in heat and other signs are beginning you could wait another week to see if there is any blood or you can have your vet take a look at her. Your vet could do a vaginal cytology to tell you more about what phase of her heat cycle she may be in. If she is not acting herself, not eating or drinking or seems lethargic at any time, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!
