Should I feel guilty about indoor potty training my apartment dog?

Firstly, do not get a one month old puppy. Puppies should not be weaned until 8 weeks of age (2 months). Getting a puppy that has been weaned too early is a very bad idea. Honestly, for a first dog, you are better off getting an adult. Have you not considered adopting a dog from a shelter? It is cruel to make a dog only use pee pads because you don't want to scoop poop from the yard. Dogs are meant to go outside, smell the grass, mark their territory, etc. Those are natural behaviors that dogs need to do. A dog is not an accessory meant to do only what we want it to do. It is a living, breathing being that has needs that must be met. I don't mean to sound harsh but it does not sound like a dog is good for your lifestyle. Smelling dog urine and feces over a long period of time would not be good for your respiratory health. That is true.

It can be confusing to train a puppy to go in the house (which is what using a pee pad really is) and also to do her business outside. She can certainly be out long enough to go in all types of weather. You can hold an umbrella over her if necessary.

You can use a diaper on your dog when you are unable to keep an eye on her. However, if you do this routinely it will be even more difficult to potty train her. Once the doapernis wet it needs to be removed soon so it will not cause urine scalding on the skin. Young puppies need to be walked every hour or so when starting potty training. If this is not feasible for you then I would recommend placing puppy pads around the house if you are unable to walk her outside and/or keeping her to a confined area. Crate training her will also help speed up potty training. Use positive reinforcement, like treats and lots of verbal praise, when she does go outside. It can take a couple of months to get your puppy fully potty trained. The keys to success are patience and persistence. I hope this helps. You are right in that crate training is usually used for teaching a dog how to hold it better when potty training. If you're looking to get Siao-lyn used to an indoor potty area, I would simply take her to the area as you would take her outside, so that she learns to go there. However, there may be some confusion over this if you are taking her both outside to potty, and inside. Instead, it would be better to try and take her outside more often so she doesn't need to hold it so long inside. Once she is older, she will be bale to hold it longer over time, and wouldn't need the indoor potty unless you plan to have her go there exclusively, anyway.

Keeping a schedule, focusing on times when your dog needs to go, keeping the area clean, and stopping accidents before they happen will make the potty training process much easier. Congratulations on your new puppy! Approach potty pad training just as you would if she was going outside. Take her to the potty pad frequently (first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps and every 2-3 hours on top of those time). Give her a command such as "Go potty!" Then lots of praise and a small treat as soon as she goes. Clean up accidents with a carpet cleaner marketed for animal odor. If you catch her going, scoop her up and carry her to the potty pad.
