Why is my Great Dane suddenly picky and refusing her dry food?

Hello! I would recommend feeding her a large breed puppy food for the first 1.5 to 2 years of life. I like the brands Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill's. A diet specifically made for large breeds will be the best for her bone growth. You can try to make kibble more enticing by adding warm water or low sodium chicken broth. I do not recommend any grain free or raw diets as they are clinically associated with nutritional problems in dogs. I hope this is helpful! It may be that Georgia Bell is just having an off morning or some minor GI upset, especially as puppies are prone to exploring the environment with their mouths. You can try offering her meal again in a few hours, or offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if she'll eat that. If she continues to refuse to eat, or does start showing symptoms such as a tender abdomen, hunched body, vomiting/diarrhea, or extreme lethargy, then that could indicate something more serious going on and should be checked by your vet.

Since Marshall will eat in general, and is only refusing his own food, I would not believe there is anything wrong with him at this time. Thank you for submitting your question. Minxy is such a small dog that she needs to be eating regularly. If her appetite change came after adding the canned food to her diet, I would stop that. She may not be liking it. If you added the canned food to encourage her to eat, then there is a primary problem affecting her appetite. Since she is so young, I would have her evaluated by her veterinarian. She may have intestinal parasites. If she does not have any medical problems, I would try a different diet and your veterinarian can recommend a probiotic to add to her food. Some of them are flavored and will entice a dog to eat. Causes of a decrease in appetite are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, he ate something gross that is upsetting his stomach, he ate something that is stuck, food allergy/intolerance, Inflammatory Bowel disease, Addison's disease, new treat/food/table food. Sometimes this can be behavioral as well, he is waiting for something better like the Pedigree. If there is not other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy then that is likely the problem. If you recently got a new bag of his food the company may have changed the formula or there is a issue with that bag of food. If you really don't want to feed him Pedigree then hold your ground. Offer his normal food, you can add water to it to make it more tempting, and if he doesn't eat it then pick it up. Do not offer treats or any other food and then he is not fed again until his next meal time. You can also consider feeding him once daily. I would try to very gradually mix in the dry food into her wet diet, for example each day feed a bit more kibble and less wet food. I generally advise against raw diets, as they can harbour bacteria and cause serious illness in both dogs and the people who handle the food. Try sticking to commercial kibble and wet food, with the goal of transitioning onto kibble over time. Experiment with different brands, and hopefully you will find something that she likes! If she seems at all unwell (low energy, vomiting, diarrhea), then I would worry about a medical cause for the low appetite, and recommend taking her to the vet.
