Yes, there is a chance this may be a benign papilomma/wart which has become tramautised from knocking on food bowl etc. Your vet may wish to biopsy the area to determine the underlying nature and fully investigate

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Regardless if benign or malignant, removal should be considered to try to make her more comfortable. If conventional treatment has not prevented Lacy from getting at the mass, then have her seen by your veterinarian. She may need to have it surgically removed. Once that is done, it can be submitted for pathology to make sure it isn't anything to worry about. It could be a benign skin mass (sebaceous adenoma) that is common in older dogs. The mass could be something like an abscess, but I can’t say for certain. You can try to give her a chance, and maybe luck will be in your favor and it’s not cancer. IF the mass is located on an organ that is safe to remove, then good. If it is attached to the spleen or uterus, those can be safely removed and dogs recover well and live comfortable without those parts. However, it should be sent off for analysis to see if it is cancer or not as that can affect the time and quality of life after. If the mass is attached to the stomach or liver, then it may not be able to be removed and you will be forced to make the decision to not wake her up from the surgery or wake her up and let her live a comfortable life for however amount of time that may be.

I would agree with the other veterinarian that this may improve quality of life now or in the future. I am sorry to hear about Fudge! What a cutie! It is difficult to see in the photo the exact location of this swelling, but I would be concerned about things like a cyst filling quickly, an abscess (pocket of infection), an infected tooth root, a hematoma (blood filled swelling), and a sialocele which is a ruptured salivary duct causing saliva to pool beneath the skin. I would recommend making an appointment for your vet to examine Fudge. If at any point she develops difficulty breathing or swallowing then a trip to the emergency vet would be recommended.
