My female dog humps my leg and then seems dazed. Is she okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Humping can be a sign of anxiety or to show dominance. It can also be sexual in nature. I would have Max on a leash when people come over and he should know basic obedience and respond to standard commands like come, stay, sit, leave it. When he starts to show signs of humping you should ask him to come to you and sit, then give him a treat. You should ask your guests to ignore him, not get him worked up, until he has calmed down. It feels good, and that's why she does it. When you see her start to do it on you, tell her no, turn your back on her (move your leg away), and ignore her. Tell her no when she does it to the cat, and also take away the pillow and say no when she tries to do it to that. She will learn it's an inappropriate behavior and she will get ignored when she does it. I hope this helps!

If there are no other signs, it certainly could just be behavioral. Humping is a dominance behvior in dogs, so yes, it is possibly occuring from Lucy getting too excited. However, if there are any changes to her vulva (enlarged, any discharge, etc.) or any other behavioral changes, I would certainly have your vet evaluate her just to be sure that there isn't a medical cause. Humping can be an ongoing behavior that may happen from time to time and it is not necessarily due to her being spayed. The scooting could be due to anal gland issues. If she continues to do that, I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Best of luck!

I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like she may be painful. Call your and see about getting her in for a recheck exam. If there is an emergency vet near you, I would recommend that you take her in to be seen. Unfortunately without seeing her and without knowing if she's received any medications at home, I cannot advise you to give her anything at home to help, she just needs to be seen by a vet. You can request a consultation so we can exchange information back and forth and I may be able to further advise you, but ideally a vet needs to examine her in person as soon as possible. However, other things are possible. This does warrant a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They can then recommend therapy accordingly. Best of luck!

No, he was not backed up, but his sluggishness may have been due to an underlying illness, injury or arthritis. But as my husband would attest to, a pretty girl can always get you out of a slump. So I think the act of breeding the female just took his mind off of things, & hopefully keep him cheery for awhile. Take care.
