What happens if an English Bulldog mates with a French Bulldog?

French bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning that their muzzle is shorter than a normal dog. This does pose some anesthetic risk but for the most part, these pets do fine under anesthesia with appropriate precautions. I do agree with your veterinarian that having her spayed is a good idea. I recommend to look for veterinarian who has experience and is comfortable with sedating brachycephalic dogs. If you notice that she is a noisy breather, you may talk to the veterinarian in advance about repairing any stenotic nares or elongated soft palate during the procedure. These conditions are very common in French bulldogs. If she’s already going to be sedated for a spay, then that would be a good time to repair these other abnormalities if the doctor thinks it’s necessary. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!

There is every chance she will go in pup - once the male is able to mate then he is likely fertile. There are a number of options available to abort unwanted pups or to neuter the female - you should contact your regular vet as soon as they are open to discuss what is available in your area (not all medications are licensed worldwide - Europe/UK have a medication which can be used in the first few weeks after mating; generally withheld until she is out of heat in case they mate again!)

I would discuss with the veterinarian the possibility of brachycephalic airway syndrome. This is a disorder of breeds such as French bulldogs which can result in regular vomiting and regurgitation due to unnatural pressures within their body, as they struggle to breathe through small nostrils and a long soft palette. This syndrome can be corrected with a surgery. This is an excellent resource to cover the topic; https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/brachycephalic-airway-syndrome-in-dogs

Very interesting question! Crossbred dogs often avoid many of the health conditions which may be associated with their respective pedigree breeds and so are often considered 'healthier'. Breeding is not an exact science however and the genetics of breeding two 50:50 crossbred dogs together could result in a wide range of pups from close to 100% either breed to 50-50 of the mixture!

For bulldogs I recommend AI, working with a veterinarian who ideally has the ability to run progesterone in hospital to help with optimal timing for the breeding. You're going to have statistically better success with AI - the specific technique used (vaginal vs cervical vs surgical insemination) will depend on the type and quality of semen you're using (fresh, chilled, or frozen), as well as the age and health history of the female. It sounds like you had good luck with natural breeding in the past, but AI is going to give you statistically better outcomes. Here's a link to a page from the AKC that summarizes the different techniques pretty well. I recommend you find a veterinarian you trust who has experience with breeding, and they can help talk you through the different methods to determine which is best for your specific breeding pair. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/dog-breeding/deciding-best-method-artificial-insemination/ Hope this helps. Good luck!

French Bulldogs are so cute! Given that she is three and is still unspayed, the biggest health risks are a pyometra and mammary tumors. Spaying her when you get her will take away the risk of a pyometra, but she will still have a 25% chance of developing mammary tumors during her lifetime. In dogs, 50% of mammary tumors are malignant, so it's important to get any lumps checked out right away that may develop on her belly. Other than that, excluding the heath risks that are common with the breed, there are no additional risks to adopting a dog who has been bred. I hope this helps!

It's only recommended if your dog is suffering from respiratory problems, otherwise i would not recommend having it done. the price can vary greatly as this syndrome in french bulldog can have multiple causes and surgeries in 4 different areas in the upper respiratory system may be needed, i don't think anyone would be able to give you an estimate before having at least a couple xrays done on him first.
