My puppy got wrong deworming dose. Is his hair loss related?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US we do not use Albendazole in dogs or cats. If Oscar only weighs 5.5 lbs and if he was given 5mls that is 200mg of albendazole and at that dose it has been reported to cause mental dullness and decreased appetite in cats. It can also affect white and red blood cells. I don't have much information about overdoses in dogs. Stop giving him the medication. The dose of ivermectin should be ok. If he gets worse or doesn't improve he should be taken to an emergency hospital. Good luck!

I am sorry I misread your question during my initial answer. If your pet received less than the dosage needed, then you would simply need to redose him another equal dose for a 20 lb dog and he will then get his accurate amount of dewormer. Typically dewormers are dosed in mg's, so if you look at the mg dosage for the weight range he should have had, it should be close to double the mg dosage for a 20 lb dog. I hope this helps! Wormers are generally considered very safe medications and although some vomiting or diarrhea may develop this should resolve uneventfully. Some types can cause tremors and neurological signs and you should contact an emergency vet and inform them of the brand, timing and dosage if you notice any unusual symptoms

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

The dose of dewormer is weight dependent so if the same drug was used it is likely the new dog weighs more or they used a different dewormer. A lot of vets use the heart worm prevention as a dewormer because it also takes care of intestinal parasites. It is really Vet preference. I hope this helps!

The most common reasons for hair loss are: skin infection, ring worm, demodex or underlying metabolic issue like a low thyroid and cushing's disease (older dogs). Also in some breeds, like boxers, will get a seasonal flank alopecia. Without seeing a picture it is hard to know what is causing Derby's hair to fall out. It is best to have him seen by your Vet.
