My dog has a wound on his privates. Vet or home treatment?

If Tomy sat in something irritating, it may have lead to him licking and chewing at his scrotum. I would recommend getting a plastic cone and placing this around his head and using an ointment such as Sentry Wound Cream which can be found online or at your local PetCo. If the wound does not improve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Tomy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Otherwise, I recommend keeping the area clean and dry. Place an E-collar on him to prevent any licking that can cause self trauma. The wound is more likely to become infected if he licks. If the wound is superficial, I suggest gently cleansing the area with a diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Applying a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time may provide some relief from itching and discomfort. Afterwards, dry the area throughly. If there is no sign of improvement in a few days or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, start [vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vomiting-in-dogs) and/or having [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/article/diarrhea-in-dogs) then have him physically examined by your veterinarian right away. Additional symptoms that should also be addressed by your veterinarian include redness, swelling, discharge or bleeding.

Hi there, It looks like Wicket either got a cut above his scrotum or has a parasite that has created a wound in that location. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian because it's difficult to determine how deep the wound is and he may need to have it sutured. Hello. Poor baby. He needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. I cannot tell if this is a tumor or somehow the penis has been trapped outside the sheath. Either way, he needs immediate care, especially if whatever is going on prevents him from urinating properly. This looks very painful & I hope you can have him seen quickly. He may need to wear an E-collar while he is healing. If the wound looks worse, becomes painful or develops a discharge, then he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

Without at least seeing a photo it is difficult to give advice. This could be a serious issue or it may be just some scrotal dematitis. This is usually very easy to treat so I'm not sure why you say the vet can't help you with a solution. Honestly, the only permanent solution is to have him neutered. This issue doesn't happen in neutered dogs. This could be a recurring issue because him scrotum is staying too wet. Do you keep him in a kennel? Is he laying in his urine a lot? You can try this over the counter antiseptic spray to see if that helps. You need to spray the scrotum 3-4 times per day in the beginning and once it starts to look better you can decrease to twice a day and then once a day. You may have to continue using it every couple days as a prevention or until you can figure out why he keeps getting this. ( ) Also, no matter what you use to treat the scrotum, it will not get better if you allow him to lick it. So, if he is licking it a lot you will need to buy him a cone collar until the scrotum is healed.
