My dog won't walk on leash, scratches, and needs shots. What now?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry you are going through this. It sounds like they started the vaccination earlier than usual. Usually the second round of vaccines is applied at around 10-12 weeks. However, you should be ok as long as you continue the vaccine schedule as recommended by a veterinarian. The next step is having them provide you with a vaccine record. If you have recently started using Frontline, then it is fair to give it a few weeks to see if it helps. If you see ticks it is important to remove them. If you see more fleas, I recommend a product called Capstar which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. I do think that it would be best to have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian sooner than 3 weeks as he is likely due for the next round of vaccines. Good luck and have a great day!

We can have a variety of reasons for itching, including allergies to things like food ingredients, environemental allergens, and fleas where just one or two bites can result in a long lasting very itchy dog. I would recommend an examination at your vet to check for possible underlying causes, such as fleas, mites, allergies. Your vet can prescribe medication to help treat whatever is causing this. In the meantime you can try an omega fatty acid supplement such as Welactin and a colloidal oatmeal shampoo and creme rinse such as Epi-soothe to help decrease the itching!

A lot of puppies striggle with the concept of walking beside people at first, especially when a lead is introduced. If you have him on a lead this is likely the issue. What I usually find helps is getting him to follow you round a safe environment first such as your garden or home. You can do this on/off lead. Never ever pull him if he isnt walking as you will make him fear the lead. If yiu have a favourite toy or treats you can coax him to walk alongside you and praise him when he does. I would focus on this for a while befire trying to get him out into the world. When he is walking well in the garden try him on the street. He will likely take a bit if a back step so be prepared to work with him again. If he continues to plant his bum when you go outside he is likely scared of all the new things going on. Try not to force him, keep coaxing him and making it look fun outside and he will eventually realise it is ok. A friendly older dog can be a great help in guiding a young pup so you could borroe a family member or friend's dog to try and show him tbat outside is fine. It can be very frustrating with a pup, but persevere and eventually it will just click with him. Good luck!

Unfortunately, the only way to vaccinate is through injections. The best thing to do in Teddy's case is to prevent exposure to possible pathogens. Rabies is relatively easy, keep him in a fenced yard and leashed when outside. Don't encourage pesky animal invaders to your property by keeping it clean and tidy. Don't go to dog parks or be around dogs whom you are not familiar with their vaccination status. Use a groomer that travels to your house rather than go to a busy grooming salon. Teddy will need to rely on "herd immunity" rather than his own immunity.

It sounds like Bear is developing some anxiety about walking for some reason. If you're pulling on his leash, correcting him, speaking to him in a frustrated way in any manner, stop all that immediately. It may also be nothing that you're doing and just genetics coming in to play. I recommend bringing really special treats on your walks and keeping him happy and relaxed with those. Plan on continuing this for a few weeks to a few months. If that doesn't work, I'd highly recommend speaking with a qualified positive-only dog trainer. As a final note, definitely do not use an electric collar on this pup under any circumstances, or you will see worsening of his behavior.

Reward once you feel slack on the collar. This can cause a walk to go no more than a few feet at the beginning, so be patient. The pull back should only be strong enough to get your dog’s attention.
