Why is my dog whimpering with diarrhea after raw food & ibuprofen?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bimbo. Motrin is very toxic to dogs so you will need to stop giving him that medication. It can cause severe kidney damage or even ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Ulcers can be indicated by black tarry or coffee grounds like stool. I suspect you were right that he is painful based on your description of his behavior. Small breed dogs can be prone to back pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm making the dog very sore. There not over-the-counter pain medications that I can recommend for him. I would keep him very quiet and carry him as much as possible. Encourage him to eat and drink as much as possible. If there is any way he could see a veterinarian, it would be best. I hope this information helps.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ricky. It sounds like he is not doing better yet if he is waking up crying. The motrin is likely masking some of the pain he may be undergoing, however, if his pain is associated with kidney disease, Motrin can cause this to get worse. I would recommend that Ricky is evaluated by his veterinarian soon to make sure there isn't anything more severe such as liver disease, pancreatitis, or kidney disease as these may require more aggressive medical attention. Poor Ben! Black stool can indicate that he has blood in his stool due to intestinal bleeding or ulcerations caused by the Ibuprofen. He probably had normal bloodwork on Friday because Ibuprofen (NSAID) can cause delayed problems (kidney, liver, GI ulcerations and GI bleeding) for up to 72 hrs after ingestion. With that said I would highly recommend taking Ben in to your local ER clinic right away for medical treatment. The vet will likely give him IV fluid therapy (to help preserve kidney function), repeat his bloodwork, give medications to treat GI ulcers, and GI coating medication (Sucralfate). Most dogs can tolerate a raw meal. The amount may have caused GI upset. Bad meat or fatty meat can also be the cause. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop or your dog becomes lethargic or exhibits symptoms of abdominal pain, see your veterinarian.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Ibuprofen should not be given to dogs as even in small amounts it can be toxic. I recommend that you have Baby girl evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Poor Darby! I would not give her any more ibuprofen as this is toxic to dogs. I would have your vet take a look at her as I am worried about her not eating/drinking and breathing funny especially since she is so young and small. It is possible she could have aspiration pneumonia which if left untreated could be very serious. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs, and even do blood work and x-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to get her on the proper meds to help her feel better. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!

With Toby bring such a young dog and being so ill I would highly advise that you take him to a vet who can hospitilise him on fluids. If he is vomiting and having loose motions I imagine he is very dehydrated.
