Why does my dog have a wet, matted, painful hotspot on his back?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 7 years and 7 months old | 79 lbs

My dog has a weird matted circular area on his back, when I looked at it closer it appeared to be "wet" and he is clearly sensitive there. Every time I try and look at it he tries to pull away. Please help anyway you can, we can't really afford to goto a vet :( we love our dog and we are very worried. Thank you for your time.

This looks like Shaggy may have a hotspot (a local infection in the skin). To completely determine what this is Shaggy would need to have that spot shaved and cleaned up.

If what he has is a hotspot, antibiotics and sometimes topical medication can help.

I would look in your area for low cost clinics or even talk to the ASPCA. In some areas the ASPCA will have low cost veterinary care for animals.

Here is a low cost clinic in your area. If you call them, they may be able to tell you how much it would be to shave that area and clean it up.

I hope Shaggy is feeling better and thank you for using PetCoach!
