My dog has a wet cough and purple belly spot. Is this an emergency?

Blue and purple spots could be bruises and if they are spreading I would be worried that your dog may have a coagulation problem. This would be very serious and would need to be investigated. A small blood test will find out whether your dog is either suffering from a congenital blood coagulation disorder or possibly ate some rodenticide which can cause the blood not to coagulate. Of course it could also just be hyperpigmentation. There are various causes for that, one being an endocrine disorder where the adrenal glands produce too much cortisone (cushings disease). I would recommend you make an appointment for an exam with your veterinarian.

Bruising on a dog is always an emergency as it can indicate internal bleeding, a clotting disorder or low platelets. I recommend to have Bingo examined immediately. Your dog should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. It sounds like he may have a heart condition that is causing fluid buildup in his abdomen. This compresses the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Your dog may need to be on a diuretic to help him clear that fluid and ease his breathing. But get him in to be seen right away. Your vet will do an exam, blood work and x-rays to determine the cause and suggest an effective treatment plan.

It appears packer is having some bruising of his umbilical area. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for a good physical exam. Some dogs have small umbilical hernias that occur at birth. Fat or even intestines can get stuck in the hernia and cause problems. Also he could be having a local skin reaction but it is really hard to tell by a picture. If his respiratory rate is normal, he's eating and drinking, seems to be feeling good (not acting lethargic), and recovers quickly from these coughing fits (within 2ish minutes), I don't think you need to take him to emergency. A mild degree of coughing is to be expected in these guys. Try to get a video if you can, that way when you do take him in, the vet can see the severity of what you are seeing at home. I would recommend you call your vet and see if you can increase the dose of Tussigon. Use the following guidelines for when to take him to ER: *respiratory rate at rest persistently above 40 breaths per minute *unrelenting cough or any coughing fit that causes his tongue to turn a blue or purple color *not eating, or acting increasingly tired and lethargic *any new symptoms arise (vomiting/diarrhea, change in the appearance of his belly such as appearing bloated, etc) I hope that's helpful for you! Oh no. Poor Sawyer. Yes this is considered to potentially be an emergency situation. These red blotchy areas are called petechiae and this could indicate a spontaneous bleeding disorder or platelet malfunction. I would recommend taking Sawyer in to an ER vet to have blood testing done and appropriate treatment depending on blood analysis findings.
