My 26lb pug needs weight care. How many calories should she eat?

Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!

For Opie to lose weight gradually and at the same time eat an appropriate amount of food he should be eating about 1,000-1,100 calories per day. How many cups you feed him will of course depend on the caloric content of the food you feed him per cup. That information should be in the back of the bag or possibly online. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Love is adorable! She is also a very good body condition. I would NOT try to make her gain anymore weight. I would try to keep her the weight she is for the rest of her life. Obesity in pugs exacerbates their breathing problems and puts extra stress on bones and promotes arthritis. Obesity causes many health conditions and shortens the life of dogs. Being lean is a good thing. You just don't want to feel or see hip bones. I prefer Royal Canin. Have a great weekend!

Keep in mind that it is recommended to give a protein with a carbohydrate such as rice which then would lower the amount of chicken. You can always check the calories in whatever you decide to feed him knowing that it should be about 465 calories. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to PetCoach. When we calculate the daily caloric requirements for dogs, we use a calculation called RER, or resting energy requirement. For a 75 lb dog, this value is 985 kcal/day. Since he is young and active, we multiply this amount by a factor to account for this. In his case, his total calories that he should ingest per day is between 1200-1300. This should help him maintain the weight he is currently at. Charlie needs around 300-400 calories per day for his weight and age (considering he is a puppy) so I would adjust the cups per day keeping this in mind. As he continues to get older and his weight increases, I would recommend continuing to follow the instructions on the food package label.
