Dog's vulva swollen and purple after fall. What does it mean?

This looks like a vaginal prolapse. That is when the vagina turns inside out. This is very swollen and needs to be lubricated and then manipulated back into place. You can clean it gently with a warm wet cloth, then apply KY Jelly to it or Vaseline to protect the sensitive skin from injury, then I'd bring her in tomorrow morning to get this examined and treated. Unfortunately, without images or a physical exam, it is difficult to determine exactly what is going on with your dog. That said, black or bluish discoloration of the skin may indicate necrosis (dying off of normal tissue) or a severe inflammatory reaction (if mainly black and also coarse to the touch). I would suspect a potential spider/centipede bite or severe yeast infection (if mainly black and coarse to the touch) or severe [vaginitis](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vaginitis/) are potential causes which should also be looked at by your vet ASAP. If this is a spider/centipede bite, it should be treated quickly with steroid therapy to stop the reaction from spreading and causing systemic (whole body) illness. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking until she sees the vet.

This looks like a mass adjacent to the vulva, and it is probably not related to the recent grooming. This could be a benign mass like a lipoma or could be something more serious, and I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to have it examined. They may want to take a small sample using a needle. Another possibility would be a hernia, although this is a little less likely based on your picture, but a veterinarian would probably be able to determine whether or not a hernia is possible based on an exam.

It looks like your pet has a case of vaginitis, inflammation of the vagina, or she has an ongoing discharge, possibly due to an infection in the cervix or uterus. She may need antibiotics, especially if she is off her appetite, drinking an excesssive amount of water &/ or peeing a lot, or seems unhappy or lethargic. Otherwise, if she seems normal, give her a few days to see if things begin to clear up. You can use warm water, or a gentle facial wipe to keep the area clean, & monitor for any further changes. Vaginal swelling is itself a sign of estrus/heat even without discharge. If it is the first season it may be that you won't notice any discharge at all. It is actually possible that the estrus is over already and vaginal swelling will go down in the next week time. The vulva looks swollen indeed. Stevie may have vaginitis, which is not uncommon in young dogs. It is usually mild but irritating bacterial infection of vulva. The other explanation I can think of is a small wound or insect bite the triggered the itchiness and irritation and Stevie by continues licking the area, made it worse. First of all, you need to stop her from licking the vulva. Head cone would be ideal. If she doesn't tolerate a cone you could try a diaper, but a cone would be better. If the swelling does not go down or at least improve in the next 24hrs you will need to take Stevie to your local vets for a check up.

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store.
