My dog threw up poop-smelling vomit. Did she eat animal waste?

As a veterinarian, I become very worried when I hear about vomit that smells like feces. It could be something as silly as Koa ate some poop, and now she's vomiting it up because eating poop is gross. However, it could also something much more serious. Vomit can smell fetid when there is an intestinal blockage, like she ate a sock or corn cob, etc, or if her intestines are bunch up and this is causing and obstruction (this is called an "intussusception" and can happen in puppies.) If she vomits once, and is otherwise doing well-- eating, drinking, playing, etc, then it may be the former scenario. However, if she looks like she feels crummy, she continues to vomit, she's not eating, etc etc etc, I would take her to a vet as soon as you can. Intestinal obstructions are very serious and require emergency surgery. Best of luck to you!

It may have been the food since she has never had it before. For some it is too rich and upsets their stomach. I would not worry about the odor. If it continues to happen then I would get her seen by a vet to make sure she does not get dehydrated. You can try boiled chicken and rice to help her stomach calm down before returning to her normal food

Pets can vomit/regurgitate for many different reasons and this can range from eating something they shouldn’t have, to parasites, to bacterial overgrowth as well as many other more sinister causes. If it only occurs once and Nellie is normal otherwise, it may not be anything to worry about. If it continues or if she exhibits other signs of illness, have your pup examined today by her veterinarian. If Nelly is now not drinking much water she is likely becoming dehydrated and is in need of fluid therapy. I would recommend having Nelly examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope Nelly gets better soon! It is not unusual for dogs to eat feces and this can make them throw up. Try to stop her from eating feces by going outside with her and immediately removing any waste. You can also feed her a product such as Forbid which can make some pets stop the behavior. Vomiting has many causes. There is a parasite called giardia that can be transferred by eating bird poop. It is a 1 celled parasite, and not a worm. It tends to cause more diarrhea then vomiting , but can cause both. I would recommend taking a poop sample to your veterinarian. If Fluffy continues to vomit then I would recommend an x-Ray to look for the possibility that she swallowed an object. It sounds as Ellabell is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
