Dog vomited on Meloxidyl. What's next with Amantadine & Omeprazole?

Hello. So sorry to hear that Goliath is having this issue. I would recommend you STOP giving the Meloxicam right away and I would honestly take him in to an emergency vet clinic to be seen right away. I think his dose of Meloxicam is quite high and it may be upsetting his stomach and could be causing some damage to his kidneys. With my calculations he should have been getting 7.5mg once a day, not twice. I would recommend he go in for some bloodwork to check his kidney values and get some additional medications to protect his stomach lining. If his kidney values are elevated he may need to be hospitalized so he can be on fluids to flush out his kidneys. I don't want to scare you but this could be a pretty serious issue. It is possible that he is feeling nauseous from the Flagyl....that daily dose for a 23 lb dog is often split into two daily doses. It is also possible that he may have a stomach upset/or even an ulcer from the Novox, especially if it was given on an empty stomach. NSAIDs do have the potential of causing vomiting and diarrhea in sensitive dogs. A bland diet of boiled rice and chicken for 3-5 days plus a stomach coating medication called sucralfate daily for a few days +/- an antacid such as famotidine + subcutaneous fluids and bloodwork could be appropriate next steps. I’d recommend returning to your veterinarian or seeking a new vet if you are more comfortable with a new vet. Hopefully the lameness is no longer an issue and with relatively conservative management the vomiting and diarrhea can be resolved as well. Good luck!

Poor pup! Yes, it's certainly possible that the meloxicam could have caused these symptoms if J ate one of your tablets off the floor - this drug can be used safely in dogs, but 7.5 mg in a 17-18 kg dog is far too much. Overdoses of meloxicam can cause severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, and even perforation of the stomach or intestines as well as kidney damage in some cases. If J is still having problems, I would definitely recommend letting your vet know that this is a possibility - he should have blood work to check his kidney function, as well as fluids, anti-nausea medication, and stomach protectants. Most dogs can recover from a one-time meloxicam overdose like this with supportive care, so it's not necessarily a reason to panic - just let you vet know that this might be the problem, to make sure that J is being treated appropriately.

Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. The problem I see with these medications is that he is taking a steroid (prednisone) and an a non-steroidal (NSAID) - meloxicam at the same time. It is not recommended those be given together. I suggest you talk to your vet about this issue. Your vet needs to decide which one he should be on (the NSAID or the steroid) and stop the other one. Divi should also be given some gastroprotectants to prevent stomach ulceration.

Glad to hear that the vomiting was resolved with Cerenia. This is usually a pretty good indication that there is no serious obstruction within the upper or lower intestinal tract. If there is continued diarrhea, the addition of an antibiotic / anti inflammatory such as metronidazole would be my next step. You can certainly use medications such as pepto bismol or maalox but I do not find them to be very effective. They do not actually address inflammation in a particularly effective manner. Another possibility unfortunately that can not be ignored in an 11 year old animal are certain types of cancer. However, I would not truly begin to consider this strongly unless there has been a longer history of problems, including weight loss and muscle wasting. Hope this makes sense.

The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow.
